Psalms 78: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
1A psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathens are come into thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.Ψαλμὸς τῷ Ἀσάφ.
2They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.Ἔθεντο τὰ θνησιμαῖα τῶν δούλων σου βρώματα τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, τὰς σάρκας τῶν ὁσίων σου τοῖς θηρίοις τῆς γῆς.
3They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them.Ἐξέχεαν τὸ αἷμα αὐτῶν ὡς ὕδωρ, κύκλῳ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ θάπτων.
4We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.Ἐγενήθημεν εἰς ὄνειδος τοῖς γείτοσιν ἡμῶν, μυκτηρισμὸς καὶ χλευασμὸς τοῖς κύκλῳ ἡμῶν.
5How long, O Lord, wilt thou be angry for ever: shall thy zeal be kindled like a fire?Ἕως πότε, Κύριε, ὀργισθήσῃ εἰς τέλος; ἐκκαυθήσεται ὡς πῦρ ὁ ζῆλός σου;
6Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that have not known thee: and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.Ἔκχεον τὴν ὀργήν σου ἐπὶ ἔθνη τὰ μὴ ἐπεγνωκότα σε, καὶ ἐπὶ βασιλείας αἳ τὸ ὄνομά σου οὐκ ἐπεκαλέσαντο.
7Because they have devoured Jacob; and have laid waste his place.Ὅτι κατέφαγον τὸν Ἰακὼβ, καὶ τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ ἠρήμωσαν.
8Remember not our former iniquities: let thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we are become exceeding poor.Μὴ μνησθῇς ἡμῶν ἀνομιῶν ἀρχαίων, ταχὺ προκαταλαβέτωσαν ἡμᾶς οἱ οἰκτιρμοί σου, ὅτι ἐπτωχεύσαμεν σφόδρα.
9Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for thy name’s sake:Βοήθησον ἡμῖν ὁ Θεὸς ὁ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν, ἕνεκα τῆς δόξης τοῦ ὀνόματός σου Κύριε ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἱλάσθητι ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ἡμῶν ἕνεκα τοῦ ὀνόματός σου·
10Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? And let him be made known among the nations before our eyes, By the revenging the blood of thy servants, which hath been shed:Μή ποτε εἴπωσιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι, ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν; καὶ γνωσθήτω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐνώπιον τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ἡμῶν ἡ ἐκδίκησις τοῦ αἵματος τῶν δούλων σου τοῦ ἐκκεχυμένου.
11Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee. According to the greatness of thy arm, take possession of the children of them that have been put to death.Εἰσελθέτω ἐνώπιόν σου ὁ στεναγμὸς τῶν πεπεδημένων, κατὰ τὴν μεγαλωσύνην τοῦ βραχίονός σου περιποίησαι τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν τεθανατωμένων.
12And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.Ἀπόδος τοῖς γείτοσιν ἡμῶν ἑπταπλάσια εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτῶν τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν αὐτῶν, ὃν ὠνείδισάν σε Κύριε.
13But we thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, will give thanks to thee for ever. We will shew forth thy praise, unto generation and generation.Ἡμεῖς γὰρ λαός σου καὶ πρόβατα νομῆς σου, ἀνθομολογησόμεθά σοι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεὰν ἐξαγγελοῦμεν τὴν αἴνεσίν σου.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
