Psalms 17: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Unto the end, for David the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hands of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.In finem. Puero Domini David, qui locutus est Domino verba cantici huius, in die qua eripuit eum Dominus de manu omnium inimicorum eius, et de manu Saul, et dixit:Εἰς τὸ τέλος τῷ παιδὶ Κυρίου τῷ Δαυὶδ, ἃ ἐλάλησε τῷ Κυρίῳ, τοὺς λόγους τῆς ᾠδῆς ταύτης, ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ ἐῤῥύσατο αὐτὸν Κύριος ἐκ χειρὸς πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς Σαοὺλ, καὶ εἶπεν,
I will love thee, O Lord, my strength:Diligam te, Domine, fortitudo mea.Αγαπήσω σε, Κύριε ἰσχύς μου.
The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer. My God is my helper, and in him will I put my trust. My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support.Dominus firmamentum meum, et refugium meum, et liberator meus. Deus meus adiutor meus, et sperabo in eum; protector meus, et cornu salutis meae, et susceptor meus.Κύριος στερέωμά μου, καὶ καταφυγή μου, καὶ ῥύστης μου· ὁ Θεός μου βοηθός μου, ἐλπιῶ ἐπʼ αὐτόν· ὑπερασπιστής μου, καὶ κέρας σωτηρίας μου, καὶ ἀντιλήπτωρ μου.
Praising I will call upon the Lord: and I shall be saved from my enemies.Laudans invocabo Dominum, et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.Αἰνῶν ἐπικαλέσομαι Κύριον, καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐχθρῶν μου σωθήσομαι.
The sorrows of death surrounded me: and the torrents of iniquity troubled me.Circumdederunt me dolores mortis, et torrentes iniquitatis conturbaverunt me.Περιέσχον με ὠδῖνες θανάτου, καὶ χείμαῤῥοι ἀνομίας ἐξετάραξάν με.
The sorrows of hell encompassed me: and the snares of death prevented me.Dolores inferni circumdederunt me; praeoccupaverunt me laquei mortis.Ὠδῖνες ᾅδου περιεκύκλωσάν με, προέφθασάν με παγίδες θανάτου.
In my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried to my God: And he heard my voice from his holy temple: and my cry before him came into his ears.In tribulatione mea invocavi Dominum, et ad Deum meum clamavi: et exaudivit de templo sancto suo vocem meam; et clamor meus in conspectu eius introivit in aures eius.Καὶ ἐν τῷ θλίβεσθαί με ἐπεκαλεσάμην τὸν Κύριον, καὶ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν μου ἐκέκραξα· ἤκουσεν ἐκ ναοῦ ἁγίου αὐτοῦ φωνῆς μου.
The earth shook and trembled: the foundations of the mountains were troubled and were moved, because he was angry with them.
There went up a smoke in his wrath: and a fire flamed from his face: coals were kindled by it.Ascendit fumus in ira eius, et ignis a facie eius exarsit; carbones succensi sunt ab eo.Ἀνέβη καπνὸς ἐν ὀργῇ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πῦρ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ κατεφλόγισεν, ἄνθρακες ἀνήφθησαν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.
He bowed the heavens, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.
And he ascended upon the cherubim, and he flew; he flew upon the wings of the winds.
And he made darkness his covert, his pavilion round about him: dark waters in the clouds of the air.Et posuit tenebras latibulum suum; in circuitu eius tabernaculum eius, tenebrosa aqua in nubibus aëris.Καὶ ἔθετο σκότος ἀποκρυφὴν αὐτοῦ, κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ ἡ σκηνὴ αὐτοῦ, σκοτεινὸν ὕδωρ ἐν νεφέλαις ἀέρων.
At the brightness that was before him the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire.Prae fulgore in conspectu eius nubes transierunt; grando et carbones ignis.Ἀπὸ τῆς τηλαυγήσεως ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ αἱ νεφέλαι διῆλθον, χάλαζα καὶ ἄνθρακες πυρός.
And the Lord thundered from heaven, and the highest gave his voice: hail and coals of fire.
And he sent forth his arrows, and he scattered them: he multiplied lightnings, and troubled them.
Then the fountains of waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were discovered: At thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the spirit of thy wrath.
He sent from on high, and took me: and received me out of many waters.Misit de summo, et accepit me; et assumpsit me de aquis multis.Ἐξαπέστειλεν ἐξ ὕψους καὶ ἔλαβέ με, προσελάβετό με ἐξ ὑδάτων πολλῶν.
He delivered me from my strongest enemies, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.Eripuit me de inimicis meis fortissimis, et ab his qui oderunt me.
They prevented me in the day of my affliction: and the Lord became my protector.praevenerunt me in die afflictionis meae: et factus est Dominus protector meus.Προέφθασάν με ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακώσεώς μου, καὶ ἐγένετο Κύριος ἀντιστήριγμά μου.
And he brought me forth into a large place: he saved me, because he was well pleased with me.Et eduxit me in latitudinem; salvum me fecit, quoniam voluit me,Καὶ ἐξήγαγέ με εἰς πλατυσμὸν, ῥύσεταί με, ὅτι ἠθέλησέ με.
And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands:et retribuet mihi Dominus secundum iustitiam meam, et secundum puritatem manuum mearum retribuet mihi:Καὶ ἀνταποδώσει μοι Κύριος κατὰ τὴν δικαιοσύνην μου, καὶ κατὰ τὴν καθαριότητα τῶν χειρῶν μου ἀνταποδώσει μοι.
Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; and have not done wickedly against my God.quia custodivi vias Domini, nec impie gessi a Deo meo;Ὅτι ἐφύλαξα τὰς ὁδοὺς Κυρίου, καὶ οὐκ ἠσέβησα ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ μου.
For till his judgments are in my sight: and his justices I have not put away from me.quoniam omnia iudicia eius in conspectu meo, et iustitias eius non repuli a me.Ὅτι πάντα τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιόν μου, καὶ τὰ δικαιώματα αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπέστησαν ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ.
And I shall be spotless with him: and shall keep myself from my iniquity.Et ero immaculatus cum eo; et observabo me ab iniquitate mea.Καὶ ἔσομαι ἄμωμος μετʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ φυλάξομαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας μου.
And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.Et retribuet mihi Dominus secundum iustitiam meam, et secundum puritatem manuum mearum in conspectu oculorum eius.Καὶ ἀνταποδώσει μοι Κύριος κατὰ τὴν δικαιοσύνην μου, καὶ κατὰ τὴν καθαριότητα τῶν χειρῶν μου ἐνώπιον τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ.
With the holy, thou wilt be holy; and with the innocent man thou wilt be innocent.
And with the elect thou wilt be elect: and with the perverse thou wilt be perverted.et cum electo electus eris, et cum perverso perverteris.Καὶ μετὰ ἐκλεκτοῦ ἐκλεκτὸς ἔσῃ, καὶ μετὰ στρεβλοῦ διαστρέψεις.
For thou wilt save the humble people; but wilt bring down the eyes of the proud.
For thou lightest my lamp, O Lord: O my God enlighten my darkness.
For by thee I shall be delivered from temptation; and through my God I shall go over a wall.Quoniam in te eripiar a tentatione; et in Deo meo transgrediar murum.Ὅτι ἐν σοὶ ῥυσθήσομαι ἀπὸ πειρατηρίου, καὶ ἐν τῷ Θεῷ μου ὑπερβήσομαι τεῖχος.
As for my God, his way is undefiled: the words of the Lord are fire tried: he is the protector of all that trust in him.Deus meus, impolluta via eius; eloquia Domini igne examinata: protector est omnium sperantium in se.Ὁ Θεός μου, ἄμωμος ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτοῦ, τὰ λόγια Κυρίου πεπυρωμένα, ὑπερασπιστής ἐστι πάντων τῶν ἐλπιζόντων ἐπʼ αὐτόν.
For who is God but the Lord? or who is God but our God?Quoniam quis deus praeter Dominum? aut quis deus praeter Deum nostrum?Ὅτι τίς Θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ Κυρίου; καὶ τίς Θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν;
God who hath girt me with strength; and made my way blameless.Deus qui praecinxit me virtute, et posuit immaculatam viam meam;Ὁ Θεὸς ὁ περιζωννύων με δύναμιν, καὶ ἔθετο ἄμωμον τὴν ὁδόν μου·
Who hath made my feet like the feet of harts: and who setteth me upon high places.qui perfecit pedes meos tamquam cervorum, et super excelsa statuens me;ὁ καταρτιζόμενος τοὺς πόδας μου ὡσεὶ ἐλάφου, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ἱστῶν με·
Who teacheth my hands to war: and thou hast made my arms like a brazen bow.qui docet manus meas ad praelium.
And thou hast given me the protection of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath held me up: And thy discipline hath corrected me unto the end: and thy discipline, the same shall teach me.et dedisti mihi protectionem salutis tuae: et dextera tua suscepit me, et disciplina tua correxit me in finem, et disciplina tua ipsa me docebit.καὶ ἔδωκάς με ὑπερασπισμὸν σωτηρίας μου· καὶ ἡ δεξιά σου ἀντελάβετό μου, καὶ ἡ παιδεία σου ἀνώρθωσέ με εἰς τέλος, καὶ ἡ παιδεία σου αὐτή με διδάξει.
Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; and my feet are not weakened.Dilatasti gressus meos subtus me, et non sunt infirmata vestigia mea.Ἐπλάτυνας τὰ διαβήματά μου ὑποκάτω μου, καὶ οὐκ ἠσθένησαν τὰ ἴχνη μου.
I will pursue after my enemies, and overtake them: and I will not turn again till they are consumed.
I will break them, and they shall not be able to stand: they shall fall under my feet.
And thou hast girded me with strength unto battle; and hast subdued under me them that rose up against me.Et praecinxisti me virtute ad bellum, et supplantasti insurgentes in me subtus me.Καὶ περιέζωσάς με δύναμιν εἰς πόλεμον, συνεπόδισας πάντας τοὺς ἐπανισταένους ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ὑποκάτω μου.
And thou hast made my enemies turn their back upon me, and hast destroyed them that hated me.Et inimicos meos dedisti mihi dorsum, et odientes me disperdidisti.Καὶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου ἔδωκάς μοι νῶτον, καὶ τοὺς μισοῦντάς με ἐξωλόθρευσας.
They cried, but there was none to save them, to the Lord: but he heard them not.
And I shall beat them as small as the dust before the wind; I shall bring them to nought, like the dirt in the streets.
Thou wilt deliver me from the contradictions of the people: thou wilt make me head of the Gentiles.Eripies me de contradictionibus populi; constitues me in caput gentium.Ῥῦσαί με ἐξ ἀντιλογιῶν λαοῦ, καταστήσεις με εἰς κεφαλὴν ἐθνῶν· λαὸς ὃν οὐκ ἔγνων, ἐδούλευσέ μοι,
A people, which I knew not, hath served me: at the hearing of the ear they have obeyed me.Populus quem non cognovi servivit mihi; in auditu auris obedivit mihi.εἰς ἀκοὴν ὠτίου ὑπήκουσέ μοι· υἱοὶ ἀλλότριοι ἐψεύσαντό μοι,
The children that are strangers have lied to me, strange children have faded away, and have halted from their paths.Filii alieni mentiti sunt mihi, filii alieni inveterati sunt, et claudicaverunt a semitis suis.υἱοὶ ἀλλότριοι ἐπαλαιώθησαν, καὶ ἐχώλαναν ἀπὸ τῶν τρίβων αὐτῶν.
The Lord liveth, and blessed be my God, and let the God of my salvation be exalted:Vivit Dominus, et benedictus Deus meus, et exaltetur Deus salutis meae.Ζῇ Κύριος, καὶ εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεός μου, καὶ ὑψωθήτω ὁ Θεὸς τῆς σωτηρίας μου.
O God, who avengest me, and subduest the people under me, my deliverer from my enemies.Deus qui das vindictas mihi, et subdis populos sub me; liberator meus de inimicis meis iracundis.Ὁ Θεὸς ὁ διδοὺς ἐκδικήσεις ἐμοὶ, καὶ ὑποτάξας λαοὺς ὑπʼ ἐμὲ,
And thou wilt lift me up above them that rise up against me: from the unjust man thou wilt deliver me.Et ab insurgentibus in me exaltabis me; a viro iniquo eripies me.ὁ ῥύστης μου ἐξ ἐχθρῶν ὀργίλων· ἀπὸ τῶν ἐπανισταμένων ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ὑψώσεις με, ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς ἀδίκου ῥύσῃ με.
Therefore will I give glory to thee, O Lord, among the nations, and I will sing a psalm to thy name.Propterea confitebor tibi in nationibus, Domine, et nomini tuo psalmum dicam;Διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαί σοι ἐν ἔθνεσι, Κύριε, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου ψαλῶ.
Giving great deliverance to his king, and shewing mercy to David his anointed: and to his seed for ever.magnificans salutes regis eius, et faciens misericordiam christo suo David, et semini eius usque in saeculum.Μεγαλύνων τὰς σωτηρίας τοῦ βασιλέως αὐτοῦ, καὶ ποιῶν ἔλεος τῷ χριστῷ αὐτοῦ τῷ Δαυὶδ, καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
