Job 13: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Behold my eye hath seen all these things, and my ear hath heard them, and I have understood them all.Ἰδοὺ ταῦτα ἑώρακέ μου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς, καὶ ἀκήκοέ μου τὸ οὖς.
According to your knowledge I also know: neither am I inferior to you.Καὶ οἶδα ὅσα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε, καὶ οὐκ ἀσυνετώτερός εἰμι ὑμῶν.
But yet I will speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.Οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλʼ ἐγὼ πρὸς Κύριον λαλήσω, ἐλέγξω δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἐὰν βούληται.
Having first shewn that you are forgers of lies, and maintainers of perverse opinions.Ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐστὲ ἰατροὶ ἄδικοι, καὶ ἰαταὶ κακῶν πάντες.
And I wish you would hold your peace, that you might be thought to be wise men.Εἴη δὲ ὑμῖν κωφεῦσαι, καὶ ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν σοφία.
Hear ye therefore my reproof, and attend to the judgment of my lips.Ἀκούσατε δὲ ἔλεγχον τοῦ στόματός μου, κρίσιν δὲ χειλέων μου προσέχετε.
Hath God any need of your lie, that you should speak deceitfully for him?Πότερον οὐκ ἔναντι Κυρίου λαλεῖτε, ἔναντι δὲ αὐτοῦ φθέγγεσθε δόλον;
Do you accept his person, and do you endeavour to judge for God?Ἢ ὑποστελεῖσθε; ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτοὶ κριταὶ γίνεσθε.
Or shall it please him, from whom nothing can be concealed? or shall he be deceived as a man, with your deceitful dealings?Καλὸν γὰρ ἐὰν ἐξιχνιάσῃ ὑμᾶς, εἰ γὰρ τὰ πάντα ποιοῦντες προστεθήσεσθε αὐτῷ,
He shall reprove you, because in secret you accept his person.οὐθὲν ἧττον ἐλέγξει ὑμᾶς· εἰ δὲ καὶ κρυφῇ πρόσωπα θαυμάσεσθε,
As soon as he shall move himself, he shall trouble you: and his dread shall fall upon you.πότερον οὐχ ἡ δῖνα αὐτοῦ στροβήσει ὑμᾶς; ὁ φόβος δὲ παρʼ αὐτοῦ ἐπιπεσεῖται ὑμῖν,
Your remembrance shall be compared to ashes, and your necks shall be brought to clay.ἀποβήσεται δὲ ὑμῶν τὸ γαυρίαμα ἶσα σποδῷ, τὸ δὲ σῶμα πήλινον.
Hold your peace a little while, that I may speak whatsoever my mind shall suggest to me.Κωφεύσατε ἵνα λαλήσω, καὶ ἀναπαύσωμαι θυμοῦ,
Why do I tear my flesh with my teeth, and carry my soul in my hands?ἀναλαβὼν τὰς σάρκας μου τοῖς ὀδοῦσι, ψυχὴν δέ μου θήσω ἐν χειρί.
Although he should bill me, I will trust in him: but yet I will reprove my ways in his sight.Ἐάν με χειρώσηται ὁ δυνάστης, ἐπεὶ καὶ ἦρκται, ἦ μὴν λαλήσω καὶ ἐλέγξω ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ·
And he shall be my saviour: for no hypocrite shall come before his presence.Καὶ τοῦτό μοι ἀποβήσεται εἰς σωτηρίαν, οὐ γὰρ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ δόλος εἰσελεύσεται.
Hear ye my speech, and receive with Sour ears hidden truths.Ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατε τὰ ῥήματά μου, ἀναγγελῶ γὰρ ὑμῶν ἀκουόντων.
If I shall be judged, I know that I shall be found just.Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐγγύς εἰμι τοῦ κρίματός μου, οἶδα ἐγὼ ὅτι δίκαιος ἀναφανοῦμαι.
Who is he that will plead against me? let him come: why am I consumed holding my peace?Τίς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ κριθησόμενός μοι, ὅτι νῦν κωφεύσω καὶ ἐκλείψω;
Two things only do not to me, and then from thy face I shall not be hid:Δυεῖν δέ μοι χρήσῃ, τότε ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου οὐ κρυβήσομαι.
Withdraw thy hand far from me, and let not thy dread terrify me.Τὴν χεῖρα ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ ἀπέχου, καὶ ὁ φόβος σου μή με καταπλησσέτω.
Call me, and I will answer thee: or else I will speak, and do thou answer me.Εἶτα καλέσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι, ἢ λαλήσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι δώσω ἀνταπόκρισιν·
How many are my iniquities and sins? make me know my crimes and offences.Πόσαι εἰσὶν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι μου καὶ ἀνομίαι μου; δίδαξόν με τίνες εἰσί.
Why hidest thou thy face, and thinkest me thy enemy?Διατί ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ κρύπτῃ, ἥγησαι δέ με ὑπεναντίον σοι;
Against a leaf, that is carried away with the wind, thou shewest thy power, and thou pursuest a dry straw.Ἢ ὡς φῦλλον κινούμενον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου εὐλαβηθήσῃ, ἢ ὡς χόρτῳ φερομένῳ ὑπὸ πνεύματος ἀντίκεισαί μοι;
For thou writest bitter things against me, and wilt consume me for the sins of my youth.Ὅτι κατέγραψας κατʼ ἐμοῦ κακὰ, περιέθηκας δέ μοι νεότητος ἁμαρτίας.
Thou hast put my feet in the stocks, and hast observed all my paths, and hast considered the steps of my feet:Ἔθου δέ μου τὸν πόδα ἐν κωλύματι, ἐφύλαξας δέ μου πάντα τὰ ἔργα, εἰς δὲ ῥίζας τῶν ποδῶν μου ἀφίκου.
Who am to be consumed as rottenness, and as a garment that is moth-eaten.Ὃ παλαιοῦται ἶσα ἀσκῷ, ἢ ὥσπερ ἱμάτιον σητόβρωτον.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
