Job 22: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ἐλιφὰζ ὁ Θαιμανίτης, λέγει,
Can man be compared with God, even though he were of perfect knowledge?Πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ Κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην;
What doth it profit God if thou be just? or what dost thou give him if thy way be unspotted?Τί γὰρ μέλει τῷ Κυρίῳ, ἐὰν σὺ ἦσθα τοῖς ἔργοις ἄμεμπτος; ἢ ὠφέλεια, ὅτι ἀπλώσῃς τὴν ὁδόν σου;
Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:Ἢ λόγον σου ποιοῦμενος ἐλέγξεις, καὶ συνεισελεύσεταί σοι εἰς κρίσιν;
And not for thy manifold wickedness, and thy infinite iniquities?Πότερον οὐχ ἡ κακία σου ἐστὶ πολλὴ, ἀναρίθμητοι δέ σου εἰσὶν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι;
For thou hast taken away the pledge of thy brethren without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.Ἠνεχύραζες δὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου διακενῆς, ἀμφίασιν δὲ γυμνῶν ἀφείλου.
Thou hast not given water to the weary, thou hast withdrawn bread from the hungry.Οὐδὲ ὕδωρ διψῶντας ἐπότισας, ἀλλὰ πεινώντων ἐστέρησας ψωμόν·
In the strength of thy arm thou didst possess the land, and being the most mighty thou holdest it.Ἐθαύμασας δέ τινων πρόσωπον, ᾤκισας δὲ τοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless thou hast broken in pieces.Χήρας δὲ ἐξαπέστειλας κενὰς, ὀρφανοὺς δὲ ἐκάκωσας.
Therefore art thou surrounded with snares, and sudden fear troubleth thee.Τοιγαροῦν ἐκύκλωσάν σε παγίδες, καὶ ἐσπούδασέ σε πόλεμος ἐξαίσιος.
And didst thou think that thou shouldst not see darkness, and that thou shouldst not be covered with the violence of overflowing waters?Τὸ φῶς σοι σκότος ἀπέβη, κοιμηθέντα δὲ ὕδωρ σε ἐκάλυψε.
Dost not thou think that God is higher than heaven, and is elevated above the height of the stars?Μὴ οὐχὶ ὁ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ναίων ἐφορᾷ; τοὺς δὲ ὕβρει φερομένους ἐταπείνωσε;
And thou sayst: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.Καὶ εἶπας, τί ἔγνω ὁ ἰσχυρός; ἢ κατὰ τοῦ γνόφου κρίνει;
The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.Νεφέλη ἀποκρυφὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐχ ὁραθήσεται, καὶ γῦρον οὐρανοῦ διαπορεύεται.
Dost thou desire to keep the path of ages, which wicked men have trodden?Μὴ τρίβον αἰώνιον φυλάξεις, ἣν ἐπάτησαν ἄνδρες δίκαιοι,
Who were taken away before their time, and a flood hath overthrown their foundation.οἳ συνελήφθησαν ἄωροι; ποταμὸς ἐπιῤῥέων οἱ θεμέλιοι αὐτῶν,
Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing:οἱ λέγοντες, Κύριος τί ποιήσει ἡμῖν; ἢ τί ἐπάξεται ἡμῖν ὁ παντοκράτωρ;
Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.Ὃς δὲ ἐνέπλησε τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν ἀγαθῶν, βουλὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πόῤῥω ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.
The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall laugh them to scorn.Ἰδόντες δίκαιοι ἐγέλασαν, ἄμεμπτος δὲ ἐμυκτήρισεν.
Is not their exaltation cut down, and hath not fire devoured the remnants of them?Εἰ μὴ ἠφανίσθη ἡ ὑπόστασις αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμα αὐτῶν καταφάγεται πῦρ.
Submit thyself then to him, and be at peace: and thereby thou shalt have the best fruits.Γενοῦ δὴ σκληρὸς, ἐὰν ὑπομείνῃς, εἶτα ὁ καρπός σου ἔσται ἐν ἀγαθοῖς.
Receive the law of his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.Ἔκλαβε δὲ ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ ἐξηγορίαν, καὶ ἀνάλαβε τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ ἐν καρδίᾳ σου.
If thou wilt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, and shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacle.Ἐὰν δὲ ἐπιστραφῇς καὶ ταπεινώσῃς σεαυτὸν ἔναντι Κυρίου, πόῤῥω ἐποίησας ἀπὸ διαίτης σου ἄδικον.
He shall give for earth flint, and for flint torrents of gold.Θήσῃ ἐπὶ χώματι ἐν πέτρᾳ, καὶ ὡς πέτρα χειμάῤῥου Σωφίρ.
And the Almighty shall be against thy enemies, and silver shall be heaped together for thee.Ἔσται οὖν σου ὁ παντοκράτωρ βοηθὸς ἀπὸ ἐχθρῶν, καθαρὸν δὲ ἀποδώσει σε ὥσπερ ἀργύριον πεπυρωμένον.
Then shalt thou abound in delights in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God.Εἶτα παῤῥησιασθήσῃ ἐναντίον Κυρίου ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἱλαρῶς.
Thou shalt pray to him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay vows.Εὐξαμένου δέ σου πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰσακούσεταί σου· δώσει δέ σοι ἀποδοῦναι τὰς εὐχάς.
Thou shalt decree a thing, and it I shall come to thee, and light shall shine in thy ways.Ἀποκαταστήσει δέ σοι δίαιταν δικαιοσύνης, ἐπὶ δὲ ὁδοῖς σου ἔσται φέγγος·
For he that hath been humbled, shall be in glory: and he that shall bow down his eyes, he shall be saved.Ὅτι ἐταπείνωσας σεαυτὸν, καὶ ἐρεῖς, ὑπερηφανεύσατο, καὶ κύφοντα ὀφθαλμοῖς σώσει.
The innocent shall be saved, and he shall be saved by the cleanness of his hands.Ῥύσεται ἀθῶον, καὶ διασώθητι ἐν καθαραῖς χερσί σου.

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
