Job 34: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
And Eliu continued his discourse, and said:Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ἐλιοὺς, λέγει,
Hear ye, wise men, my words, and ye learned, hearken to me:Ἀκούσατέ μου σοφοὶ, ἐπιστάμενοι ἐνωτίζεσθε.
For the ear trieth words, and the mouth discerneth meats by the taste.Ὅτι οὖς λόγους δοκιμάζει, καὶ λάρυγξ γεύεται βρῶσιν.
Let us choose to us judgment, and let us see among ourselves what is the best.Κρίσιν ἑλώμεθα ἑαυτοῖς, γνῶμεν ἀναμέσον ἑαυτῶν, ὅ, τι καλόν.
For Job hath said: I am just, and God hath overthrown my judgment.Ὅτι εἴρηκεν Ἰὼβ, δίκαιός εἰμι· ὁ Κύριος ἀπήλλαξέ μου τὸ κρίμα.
For in judging me there is a lie: my arrow is violent without any sin.Ἐψεύσατο δὲ τῷ κρίματί μου, βίαιον τὸ βέλος μου ἄνευ ἀδικίας.
What man is there like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?Τίς ἀνὴρ ὥσπερ Ἰὼβ, πίνων μυκτηρισμὸν ὥσπερ ὕδωρ;
Who goeth in company with them that work iniquity, and walketh with wicked men?Οὐχ ἁμαρτῶν οὐδὲ ἀσεβήσας, ἢ οὐδʼ οὐ κοινωνήσας μετὰ ποιούντων τὰ ἄνομα, τοῦ πορευθῆναι μετὰ ἀσεβῶν.
For he hath said: Man shall not please God, although he run with him.Μὴ γὰρ εἴπῃς, ὅτι οὐκ ἔσται ἐπισκοπὴ ἀνδρός, καὶ ἐπισκοπὴ αὐτῷ παρὰ Κυρίου.
Therefore, ye men of understanding, hear me: far from god be wickedness, and iniquity from the Almighty.Διὸ συνετοὶ καρδίας ἀκούσατέ μου, μή μοι εἴη ἔναντι Κυρίου ἀσεβῆσαι, καὶ ἔναντι παντοκράτορος ταράξαι τὸ δίκαιον.
For he will render to a man his work, and according to the ways of every one he will reward them.Ἀλλὰ ἀποδιδοῖ ἀνθρώπῳ καθὰ ποιεῖ ἕκαστος αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐν τρίβῳ ἀνδρὸς εὑρήσει αὐτόν.
For in very deed God will not condemn without cause, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.Οἴει δὲ τὸν Κύριον ἄτοπα ποιήσειν, ἢ ὁ παντοκράτωρ ταράξει κρίσιν,
What other hath he appointed over the earth? or whom hath he set over the world which he made?ὃς ἐποίησε τὴν γῆν; Τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ὑπʼ οὐρανὸν, καὶ τὰ ἐνόντα πάντα;
If he turn his heart to him, he shall draw his spirit and breath unto himself.Εἰ γὰρ βούλοιτο συνέχειν, καὶ τὸ σνεῦμα παρʼ αὐτῷ κατασχεῖν,
All flesh shall perish together, and man shall return into ashes.τελευτήσει πᾶσα σὰρξ ὁμοθυμαδὸν, πᾶς δὲ βροτὸς εἰς γῆν ἀπελεύσεται, ὅθεν καὶ ἐπλάσθη.
If then thou hast understanding, hear what is said, and hearken to the voice of my words.Ἴδὲ μὴ νουθετῇ, ἄκουε ταῦτα, ἐνωτίζου φωνὴν ῥημάτων.
Can he be healed that loveth not judgment? and how dost thou so far condemn him that is just?Ἴδε σὺ τὸν μισοῦντα ἄνομα, καὶ τὸν ὀλλύντα τοὺς πονηροὺς, ὄντα αἰώνιον δίκαιον.
Who saith to the king: Thou art an apostate: who calleth rulers ungodly?Ἀσεβὴς ὁ λέγων βασιλεῖ, παρανομεῖς, ἀσεβέστατε τοῖς ἄρχουσιν.
Who accepteth not the persons of princes: nor hath regarded the tyrant, when he contended against the poor man: for all are the work of his hands.Ὃς οὐκ ἐπαισχυνθῇ πρόσωπον ἐντίμου, οὐδὲ οἶδε τιμὴν θέσθαι ἁδροῖς θαυμασθῆναι πρόσωπα αὐτῶν.
They shall suddenly die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and they shall pass, and take away the violent without hand.Κενὰ δὲ αὐτοῖς ἀποβήσεται, τὸ κεκραγέναι καὶ δεῖσθαι ἀνδρός· ἐχρήσαντο γὰρ παρανόμως, ἐκκλινομένων ἀδυνάτων.
For his eyes are upon the ways of men, and he considereth all their steps.Αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁρατής ἐστιν ἔργων ἀνθρώπων, λέληθε δὲ αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ὧν πράσσουσιν.
There is no darkness, and there is no shadow of death, where they may be hid who work iniquity.Οὐδὲ ἔσται τόπος τοῦ κρυβῆναι τοὺς ποιοῦντας τὰ ἄνομα·
For it is no longer in the power of man to enter into judgment with God.Ὅτι οὐκ ἐπʼ ἄνδρα θήσει ἔτι.
He shall break in pieces many and innumerable, and shall make others to stand in their stead.Ὁ γὰρ Κύριος πάντας ἐφορᾷ· ὁ καταλαμβάνων ἀνεξιχνίαστα, ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια, ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός.
For he knoweth their works: and therefore he shall bring night on them, and they shall be destroyed.Ὁ γνωρίζων αὐτῶν τὰ ἔργα, καὶ στρέψει νύκτα καὶ ταπεινωθήσοται.
He hath struck them, as being wicked, in open sight.Ἔσβεσε δὲ ἀσεβεῖς, ὁρατοὶ δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ.
Who as it were on purpose have revolted from him, and would not understand all his ways:Ὅτι ἐξέκλιναν ἐκ νόμου Θεοῦ, δικαιώματα δὲ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν,
So that they caused the cry of the needy to come to him, and he heard the voice of the poor.τοῦ ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν κραυγὴν πενήτων, καὶ κραυγὴν πτωχῶν εἰσακούσεται.
For when he granteth peace, who is there that can condemn? When he hideth his countenance, who is there that can behold him, whether it regard nations, or all men?Καὶ αὐτὸς ἡσυχίαν παρέξει, καὶ τίς καταδικάσεται; καὶ κρύψει πρόσωπον, καὶ τίς ὄψεται αὐτόν; καὶ κατὰ ἔθνους, καὶ κατὰ ἀνθρώπου ὁμοῦ.
Who maketh a man that is a hypocrite to reign for the sins of the people?Βασιλεύων ἀνθρωπον ὑποκριτὴν ἀπὸ δυσκολίας λαοῦ.
Seeing then I have spoken of God, I will not hinder thee in thy turn.Ὅτι πρὸς τὸν ἰσχυρὸν ὁ λέγων, εἴληφα, οὐκ ἐνεχυράσω·
If I have erred, teach thou me: if I have spoken iniquity, I will add no more.Ἄνευ ἐμαυτοῦ ὄψομαι· σὺ δεῖξόν μοι, εἰ ἀδικίαν εἰργασάμην, οὐ μὴ προσθήσω.
Doth God require it of thee, because it hath displeased thee? for thou begannest to speak, and not I: but if thou know any thing better, speak.Μὴ ἀπὸ σοῦ ἀποτίσει αὐτὴν, ὅτι σὺ ἀπώσῃ; ὅτι σὺ ἐκλέξῃ καὶ οὐκ ἐγώ; καὶ τί ἔγνως, λάλησον.
Let men of understanding speak to me, and let a wise man hearken to me.Διὸ συνετοὶ καρδίας ἐροῦσι ταῦτα, ἀνὴρ δὲ σοφὸς ἀκήκοέ μου τὸ ῥῆμα.
But Job hath spoken foolishly, and his words sound not discipline.Ἰὼβ δὲ οὐκ ἐν συνέσει ἐλάλησε, τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐν ἐπιστήμῃ.
My father, let Job be tried even to the end: cease not from the man of iniquity.Οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ μάθε Ἰώβ, μὴ δῷς ἔτι ἀνταπόκρισιν ὥσπερ οἱ ἄφρονες·
Because he addeth blasphemy upon his sins, let him be tied fast in the mean time amongst us: and then let him provoke God to judgment with his speeches.Ἵνα μὴ προσθῶμεν ἐφʼ ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν, ἀνομία δὲ ἐφʼ ἡμῖν λογισθήσεται, πολλὰ λαλούντων ῥήματα ἐναντίον τοῦ Κυρίου.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
