Isaiah 10: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Woe to them that make wicked laws: and when they write, write injustice:Οὐαὶ τοῖς γράφουσι πονηρίαν, γράφοντες γὰρ, πονηρίαν γράφουσιν·
To oppress the poor in judgment, and do violence to the cause of the humble of my people: that widows might be their prey, and that they might rob the fatherless.Ἐκκλίνοντες κρίσιν πτωχῶν, ἁρπάζοντες κρίμα πενήτων τοῦ λαοῦ μου, ὥστε εἶναι αὐτοῖς χήραν εἰς διαρπαγὴν, καὶ ὀρφανὸν εἰς προνομήν.
What will you do in the day of visitation, and of the calamity which cometh from afar? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?Καὶ τί ποιήσουσιν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς; ἡ γὰρ θλίψις ὑμῖν πόῤῥωθεν ἥξει· καὶ πρὸς τίνα καταφεύξεσθε τοῦ βοηθηθῆναι; καὶ ποῦ καταλείψετε τὴν δόξαν ὑμῶν, τοῦ μὴ ἐμπεσεῖν εἰς ἀπαγωγήν;
That you be not bowed down under the bond, and fall with the slain? In all these things his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.Ἐπὶ πᾶσι τούτοις οὐκ ἀπεστράφη ἡ ὀργή, ἀλλʼ ἔτι ἡ χεὶρ ὑψηλή.
Woe to the Assyrian, he is the rod and the staff of my anger, and my indignation is in their hands.Οὐαὶ Ἀσσυρίοις, ἡ ῥάβδος τοῦ θυμοῦ μου, καὶ ὀργή ἐστιν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.
I will send him to a deceitful nation, and I will give him a charge against the people of my wrath, to take away the spoils, and to lay hold on the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.Τὴν ὀργήν μου εἰς ἔθνος ἄνομον ἀποστελῶ, καὶ τῷ ἐμῷ λαῷ συντάξω ποιῆσαι σκῦλα καὶ προνομήν, καὶ καταπατεῖν τὰς πόλεις, καὶ θεῖναι αὐτὰς εἰς κονιορτόν.
But he shall not take it so, and his heart shall not think so: but his heart shall be set to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.Αὐτὸς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐνεθυμήθη, καὶ τῇ ψυχῇ οὐχ οὕτως λελόγισται, ἀλλὰ ἀπαλλάξει ὁ νοῦς αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοῦ ἔθνη ἐξολοθρεῦσαι οὐκ ὀλίγα.
For he shall say:Καὶ ἐὰν εἴπωσιν αὐτῷ, σὺ μόνος εἶ ἄρχων·
Are not my princes as so many kings? is not Calano as Charcamis: and Emath as Arphad? is not Samaria as Damascus?Καὶ ἐρεῖ, οὐκ ἔλαβον τὴν χώραν τὴν ἐπάνω Βαβυλῶνος καὶ Χαλάνης, οὗ ὁ πύργος ᾠκοδομήθη, καὶ ἔλαβον Ἀραβίαν καὶ Δαμασκὸν καὶ Σαμάρειαν;
As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idol, so also their idols of Jerusalem, and of Samaria.Ὃν τρόπον ταύτας ἔλαβον, καὶ πάσας τὰς ἀρχὰς λήψομαι· ὀλολύξατε τὰ γλυπτὰ ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ.
Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?Ὃν τρόπον γὰρ ἐποίησα Σαμαρείᾳ, καὶ τοῖς χειροποιήτοις αὐτῆς, οὕτω ποιήσω καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῆς.
And it shall come to pass, that when the Lord shall have performed all his works in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem, I will visit the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.Καὶ ἔσται ὅταν συντελέσῃ Κύριος πάντα ποιῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει Σιὼν καὶ Ἱερουσαλήμ, ἐπισκέψομαι ἐπὶ τὸν νοῦν τὸν μέγαν ἐπὶ τὸν ἄρχοντα τῶν Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ὕψος τῆς δόξης τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ.
For he hath said: By the strength of my own hand I have done it, and by my own wisdom I have understood: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have taken the spoils of the princes, and as a mighty man hath pulled down them that sat on high.Εἶπε γὰρ, ἐν τῇ ἰσχύϊ ποιήσω, καὶ ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ τῆς συνέσεως ἀφελῶ ὅρια ἐθνῶν, καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῶν προνομεύσω·
And my hand hath found the strength of the people as a nest; and as eggs are gathered, that are left, so have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or made the least noise.Καὶ σείσω πόλεις κατοικουμένας, καὶ τὴν οἰκουμένην ὅλην καταλήψομαι τῇ χειρὶ ὡς νοσσιὰν, καὶ ὡς καταλελειμμένα ὠὰ ἀρῶ· καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὃς διαφεύξεταί με, ἢ ἀντείπῃ μοι.
Shall the axe boast itself against him that cutteth with it? or shall the saw exalt itself against him by whom it is drawn? as if a rod should lift itself up against him that lifteth it up, and a staff exalt itself, which is but wood.Μὴ δοξασθήσεται ἀξίνη ἄνευ τοῦ κόπτοντος ἐν αὐτῇ; ἢ ὑψωθήσεται πριὼν ἄνευ τοῦ ἔλκοντος αὐτόν; ὡς ἄν τις ἄρῃ ῥάβδον ἢ ξύλον· καὶ οὐχ οὕτως,
Therefore the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall send leanness among his fat ones: and under his glory shall be kindled a burning, as it were the burning of a fire.ἀλλὰ ἀποστελεῖ Κύριος σαβαὼθ εἰς τὴν σὴν τιμὴν ἀτιμίαν, καὶ εἰς τὴν σὴν δόξαν πῦρ καιόμενον καυθήσεται.
And the light of Israel shall be as a fire, and the Holy One thereof as a flame: and his thorns and his briers shall be set on fire, and shall be devoured in one day.Καὶ ἔσται τὸ φῶς τοῦ Ἰσρὴλ εἰς πῦρ, καὶ ἁγιάσει αὐτὸν ἐν πυρὶ καιομένῳ, καὶ φάγεται ὡσεὶ χόρτον τὴν ὕλην·
And the glory of his forest, and of his beautiful hill, shall be consumed from the soul even to the flesh, and he shall run away through fear.τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀποσβεσθήσεται τὰ ὄρη, καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ, καὶ οἱ δρυμοὶ, καὶ καταφάγεται ἀπὸ ψυχὴς ἕως σαρκῶν· καὶ ἔσται ὁ φεύγων, ὡς ὁ φεύγων ἀπὸ φλογὸς καιομένης.
And they that remain of the trees of his forest shall be so few, that they shall easily be numbered, and a child shall write them down.Καὶ οἱ καταλειφθέντες ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀριθμὸς ἔσονται, καὶ παιδίον γράψει αὐτούς.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that shall escape of the house of Jacob, shall lean no more upon him that striketh them: but they shall lean upon the Lord the Holy One of Israel, in truth.Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, οὐκέτι προστεθήσεται τὸ καταλειφθὲν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ οἱ σωθέντες τοῦ Ἰακὼβ οὐκέτι μὴ πεποιθότες ὦσιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀδικήσαντας αὐτοὺς, ἀλλὰ ἔσονται πεποιθότες ἐπὶ τὸν Θεὸν τὸν ἅγιον τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ.
The remnant shall be converted, the remnant, I say, of Jacob, to the mighty God.Καὶ ἔσται τὸ καταλειφθὲν τοῦ Ἰακὼβ ἐπὶ Θεὸν ἰσχύοντα.
For if thy people, O Israel, shall be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them shall be converted, the consumption abridged shall overflow with justice.Καὶ ἐὰν γένηται ὁ λαὸς Ἰσραὴλ ὡς ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, τὸ κατάλειμμα αὐτῶν σωθήσεται.
For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, and an abridgment in the midst of all the land.Λόγον συντελῶν καὶ συντέμνων ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, ὅτι λόγον συντετμημένον Κύριος ποιήσει ἐν τῇ οἰκουμένῃ ὅλῃ.
Therefore, thus saith the Lord the God of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Sion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall strike thee with his rod, and he shall lift up his staff over thee in the way of Egypt.Διατοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος σαβαὼθ, μὴ φοβοῦ ὁ λαός μου, οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Σιὼν, ἀπὸ Ἀσσυρίων, ὅτι ἐν ῥάβδῳ πατάξει σε· πληγὴν γὰρ ἐπάγω ἐπὶ σὲ, τοῦ ἰδεῖν ὁδὸν Αἰγύπτου.
For yet a little and a very little while, and my indignation shall cease, and my wrath shall be upon their wickedness.Ἔτι γὰρ μικρὸν, καὶ παύσεται ἡ ὀργὴ, ὁ δὲ θυμός μου ἐπὶ τὴν βουλὴν αὐτῶν.
And the Lord of hosts shall raise up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Madian in the rock of Oreb, and his rod over the sea, and he shall lift it up in the way of Egypt.Καὶ ἐγερεῖ ὁ Θεὸς ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς, κατὰ τὴν πληγὴν Μαδιὰμ ἐν τόπῳ θλίψεως· καὶ ὁ θυμὸς αὐτοῦ τῇ ὁδῷ τῇ κατὰ θάλασσαν, εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν κατʼ Αἴγυπτον.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall putrify at the presence of the oil.Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, ἀφαιρεθήσεται ὁ ζυγὸς αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὤμου σου, καὶ ὁ φόβος αὐτοῦ ἀπό σου, καὶ καταφθαρήσεται ὁ ζυγὸς ἀπὸ τῶν ὤμων ὑμῶν.
He shall come into Aiath, he shall pass into Magron: at Machmas he shall lay up his carriages.Ἥξει γὰρ εἰς τὴν πόλιν Ἀγγαί, καὶ παρελεύσεται εἰς Μαγεδὼ, καὶ ἐν Μαχμὰς θήσει τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ.
They have passed in haste, Gaba is our lodging: Rama was astonished, Gabaath of Saul fled away.Καὶ παρελεύσεται φάραγγα, καὶ ἥξει εἰς Ἀγγαί, φόβος λήψεται Ῥαμᾶ, πόλιν Σαοὺλ, φεύξεται
Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim, attend, O Laisa, poor Anathoth.ἡ θυγάτηρ Γαλλεὶμ, ἐπακούσεται Λαϊσα, ἐπακούσεται ἐν Ἀναθώθ.
Medemena is removed: ye inhabitants of Gabim, take courage.Καὶ ἐξέστη Μαδεβηνὰ, καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γιββείρ.
It is yet day enough, to remain in Nobe: he shall shake his hand against the mountain of the daughter of Sion, the hill of Jerusalem.Παρακαλεῖτε σήμερον ἐν ὁδῷ τοῦ μεῖναι, τῇ χειρὶ παρακαλεῖτε τὸ ὄρος τὴν θυγατέρα Σιὼν, καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ οἱ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ.
Behold the sovereign Lord of hosts shall break the earthen vessel with terror, and the tall of stature shall be cut down, and the lofty shall be humbled.Ἰδοὺ ὁ δεσπότης Κύριος σαβαὼθ συνταράσσει τοὺς ἐνδόξους μετὰ ἰσχύος, καὶ οἱ ὑψηλοὶ τῇ ὕβρει συντριβήσονται, καὶ οἱ ὑψηλοὶ ταπεινωθήσονται,
And the thickets of the forest shall be cut down with iron, and Libanus with its high ones shall fall.καὶ πεσοῦνται ὑψηλοὶ μαχαίρᾳ, ὁ δὲ Λίβανος σὺν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς πεσεῖται.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
