Then Nathan the prophet arose in the days of David.Post haec surrexit Nathan, propheta in diebus David.Καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἀνέστη Νάθαν προφητεύειν ἐν ἡμέραις Δαυίδ.
And as the fat taken away from the flesh, so was David chosen from among the children of Israel.Et quasi adeps separatus a carne, sic David a filiis Israël.Ὥσπερ στέαρ ἀφωρισμένον ἀπὸ σωτηρίου, οὕτως Δαυὶδ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
He played with lions as with lambs: and with bears he did in like manner as with the lambs of the flock, in his youth.Cum leonibus lusit quasi cum agnis, et in ursis similiter fecit sicut in agnis ovium, in iuventute sua.Ἐν λέουσιν ἔπαισεν ὡς ἐν ἐρίφοις, καὶ ἐν ἄρκοις ὡς ἐν ἄρνασι προβάτων.
Did not he kill the giant, and take away reproach from his people?Numquid non occidit gigantem, et abstulit opprobrium de gente?Ἐν νεότητι αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ ἀπέκτεινε γίγαντα, καὶ ἐξῇρεν ὀνειδισμὸν ἐκ λαοῦ, ἐν τῷ ἐπᾶραι χεῖρα ἐν λίθῳ σφενδόνης, καὶ καταβαλεῖν γαυρίαμα τοῦ Γολιάθ;
In lifting up his hand, with the stone in the sling he beat down the boasting of Goliath:In tollendo manum, saxo fundae deiecit exsultationem Goliae:Ἐπεκαλέσατο γὰρ Κύριον τὸν ὕψιστον, καὶ ἔδωκεν ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ κράτος ἐξᾶραι ἄνθρωπον δυνατὸν ἐν πολέμῳ, ἀνυψῶσαι κέρας λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.
For he called upon the Lord the Almighty, and he gave strength in his right hand, to take away the mighty warrior, and to set up the horn of his nation.nam invocavit Dominum omnipotentem, et dedit in dextera eius tollere hominem fortem in bello, et exaltare cornu gentis suae.Οὕτως ἐν μυριάσιν ἐδόξασεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ᾔνεσεν αὐτὸν ἐν εὐλογίαις Κυρίου, ἐν τῷ φέρεσθαι αὐτῷ διάδημα δόξης.
So in ten thousand did he glorify him, and praised him in the blessings of the Lord, in offering to him a crown of glory:Sic in decem millibus glorificavit eum: et laudavit eum in benedictionibus Domini, in offerendo illi coronam gloriae:Ἐξέτριψε γὰρ ἐχθροὺς κυκλόθεν, καὶ ἐξουδένωσε Φυλιστιεὶμ τοὺς ὑπεναντίους· ἕως σήμερον συνετριψεν αὐτῶν κέρας.
For he destroyed the enemies on every side, and extirpated the Philistines the adversaries unto this day: he broke their horn for ever.contrivit enim inimicos undique, et extirpavit Philisthiim contrarios usque in hodiernum diem: contrivit cornu ipsorum usque in aeternum.Ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν ἐξομολόγησιν· ἁγίῳ ὑψίστῳ ῥήματι δόξης ἐν πάσῃ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ὕμνησε, καὶ ἠγάπησε τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν.
In all his works he gave thanks to the holy one, and to the most High, with words of glory. In omni opere dedit confessionem Sancto, et Excelso in verbo gloriae.Καὶ ἔστησε ψαλτῳδοὺς κατέναντι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου, καὶ ἐξ ἤχου αὐτῶν γλυκαίνει μέλη.
With his whole heart he praised the Lord, and loved God that made him: and he gave him power against his enemies:De omni corde suo laudavit Dominum: et dilexit Deum, qui fecit illum, et dedit illi contra inimicos potentiam:Ἔδωκεν ἐν ἐορταῖς εὐπρέπειαν, καὶ ἐκόσμησε καιροὺς μέχρι συντελείας· ἐν τῷ αἰνεῖν αὐτοὺς τὸ ἅγιον ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ πρωῒ ἠχεῖν τὸ ἁγίασμα.
And he set singers before the altar, and by their voices he made sweet melody.et stare fecit cantores contra altare, et in sono eorum dulces fecit modos.Κύριος ἀφεῖλε τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἀυτοῦ, καὶ ἀνύψωσεν εἰς αἰῶνα τὸ κέρας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ διαθήκην βασιλέων καὶ θρόνον δόξης ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ.
And to the festivals he added beauty, and set in order the solemn times even to the end of his life, that they should praise the holy name of the Lord, and magnify the holiness of God in the morning.Et dedit in celebrationibus decus, et ornavit tempora usque ad consummationem vitae, ut laudarent nomen sanctum Domini, et amplificarent mane Dei sanctitatem.Μετὰ τούτου ἀνέστη υἱὸς ἐπιστήμων, καὶ διʼ αὐτὸν κατέλυσεν ἐν πλατυσμῷ.
The Lord took away his sins, and exalted his horn for ever: and he gave him a covenant of the kingdom, and a throne of glory in Israel.Dominus purgavit peccata ipsius, et exaltavit in aeternum cornu eius: et dedit illi testamentum regni, et sedem gloriae in Israël.Σαλωμὼν ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν ἡμέραις εἰρήνης, ᾧ ὁ Θεὸς κατέπαυσε κυκλόθεν, ἵνα στήσῃ οἶκον ἐπʼ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἑτοιμάσῃ ἁγίασμα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
After him arose up a wise son, and for his sake he cast down all the power of the enemies.Post ipsum surrexit filius sensatus, et propter illum deiecit omnem potentiam inimicorum.Ὡς ἐσοφίσθης ἐν νεότητί σου, καὶ ἐνεπλήσθης ὡς ποταμὸς συνέσεως.
Solomon reigned in days of peace, and God brought all his enemies under him, that he might build a house in his name, and prepare a sanctuary for ever: O how wise wast thou in thy youth!Salomon imperavit in diebus pacis, cui subiecit Deus omnes hostes, ut conderet domum in nomine suo, et pararet sanctitatem in sempiternum. Quemadmodum eruditus es in iuventute tua,Γῆν ἐπεκάλυψεν ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ ἐνέπλησας ἐν παραβολαῖς αἰνιγμάτων.
And thou wast filled as a river with wisdom, and thy soul covered the earth.et impletus es, quasi flumen, sapientia, et terram retexit anima tua.Εἰς νήσους πόῤῥω ἀφίκετο τὸ ὄνομά σου, καὶ ἠγαπήθης ἐν τῇ εἰρήνῃ σου.
And thou didst multiply riddles in parables: thy name went abroad to the islands far off, and thou wast beloved in thy peace.Et replesti in comparationibus aenigmata: ad insulas longe divulgatum est nomen tuum, et dilectus es in pace tua.Ἐν ᾠδαῖς καὶ παροιμίαις καὶ παραβολαῖς, καὶ ἐν ἑρμηνείαις ἀπεθαύμασάν σε χῶραι.
The countries wondered at thee for thy canticles, and proverbs, and parables, and interpretations,In cantilenis, et proverbiis, et comparationibus, et interpretationibus, miratae sunt terrae:Ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ἐπικεκλημένου Θεοῦ Ἰσραὴλ, συνήγαγες ὡς κασσίτερον τὸ χρυσίον, καὶ ὡς μόλιβδον ἐπλήθυνας ἀργύριον.
And at the name of the Lord God, whose surname is, God of Israel.et in nomine Domini Dei, cui est cognomen Deus Israël.Παρενέκλινας τὰς λαγόνας σου γυναιξὶ, καὶ ἐνεξουσιάσθης ἐν τῷ σώματί σου.
Thou didst gather gold as copper, and didst multiply silver as lead,Collegisti quasi auricalcum aurum, et ut plumbum complesti argentum:Ἔδωκας μῶμον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ σου, καὶ ἐβεβήλωσας τὸ σπέρμα σου, ἐπαγαγεῖν ὀργὴν ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα σου, καὶ κατενύγην ἐπὶ τῇ ἀφροσύνῃ σου,
And thou didst bow thyself to women: and by thy body thou wast brought under subjection.et inclinasti femora tua mulieribus: potestatem habuisti in corpore tuo.γενέσθαι δίχα τυραννίδα, καὶ ἐξ Ἐφραὶμ ἄρξαι βασιλείαν ἀπειθῆ.
Thou hast stained thy glory, and defiled thy seed so as to bring wrath upon thy children, and to have thy folly kindled,Dedisti maculam in gloria tua, et profanasti semen tuum, inducere iracundiam ad liberos tuos, et incitari stultitiam tuam:Ὁ δὲ Κύριος οὐ μὴ καταλίπῃ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ μη διαφθαρῇ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ· οὐδὲ μὴ ἐξαλείψῃ ἐκλεκτοῦ ἔκγονα, καὶ σπέρμα τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος αὐτὸν οὐ μὴ ἐξάρῃ· καὶ τῷ Ἰακὼβ ἔδωκε κατάλειμμα, καὶ τῷ Δαυὶδ ἐξ αὐτοῦ ῥίζαν.
That thou shouldst make the kingdom to be divided, and out of Ephraim a rebellious kingdom to rule.ut faceres imperium bipartitum, et ex Ephraim imperare imperium durum.Καὶ ἀνεπαύσατο Σαλωμὼν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων· καὶ κατέλιπε μετʼ αὐτὸν ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτοῦ, λαοῦ ἀφροσύνην καὶ ἐλασσούμενον συνέσει, Ῥοβοὰμ, ὃς ἀπέστησε λαὸν ἐκ βουλῆς αὐτοῦ· καὶ Ἱεροβοὰμ υἱὸν Ναβὰτ, ὃς ἐξήμαρτε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἔδωκε τῷ Ἐφραὶμ ὁδὸν ἁμαρτίας.
But God will not leave off his mercy, and he will not destroy, nor abolish his own works, neither will he out up by the roots the offspring of his elect: and he will not utterly take away the seed of him that loveth the Lord.Deus autem non derelinquet misericordiam suam: et non corrumpet, nec delebit opera sua, neque perdet a stirpe nepotes electi sui, et semen eius qui diligit Dominum non corrumpet.Καὶ ἐπληθύνθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτῶν σφόδρα, ἀποστῆσαι αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν.
Wherefore he gave a remnant to Jacob, and to David of the same stock.Dedit autem reliquum Iacob, et David de ipsa stirpe.Καὶ πᾶσαν πονηρίαν ἐξεζήτησαν, ἕως ἐκδίκησις ἔλθῃ ἐπʼ αὐτούς.
And Solomon had an end with his fathers.Et finem habuit Salomon cum patribus suis.—
And he left behind him of his seed, the folly of the nation,Et dereliquit post se de semine suo, gentis stultitiam,—
Even Roboam that had little wisdom, who turned away the people through his counsel:et imminutum a prudentia, Roboam, qui avertit gentem consilio suo:—
And Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who caused Israel to sin, and shewed Ephraim the way of sin, and their sins were multiplied exceedingly.et Ieroboam filium Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israël, et dedit viam peccandi Ephraim: et plurima redundaverunt peccata ipsorum.—
They removed them far away from their land.Valde averterunt illos a terra sua.—
And they sought out all iniquities, till vengeance came upon them, and put an end to all their sins.Et quaesivit omnes nequitias, usque dum perveniret ad illos defensio, et ab omnibus peccatis liberavit eos.—

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
