Job 7: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
The life of man upon earth is a warfare, and his days are like the days of a hireling.Militia est vita hominis super terram, et sicut dies mercenarii dies eius.Πότερον οὐχὶ πειρατήριόν ἐστιν ὁ βίος ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς; καὶ ὥσπερ μισθίου αὐθημερινοῦ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ;
As a servant longeth for the shade, as the hireling looketh for the end of his work;Sicut servus desiderat umbram, et sicut mercenarius praestolatur finem operis sui,Ἢ ὥσπερ θεράπων δεδοικὼς τὸν Κύριον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τετευχὼς σκιᾶς; ἢ ὥσπερ μισθωτὸς ἀναμένων τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ;
So I also have had empty months, and have numbered to myself wearisome nights.sic et ego habui menses vacuos, et noctes laboriosas enumeravi mihi.Οὕτως κᾀγὼ ὑπέμεινα μῆνας κενοὺς, νύκτες δὲ ὀδυνῶν δεδομέναι μοι εἰσίν.
If I lie down to sleep, I shall say: When shall arise? and again I shall look for the evening, and shall be filled with sorrows even till darkness.
My flesh is clothed with rottenness and the filth of dust, my skin is withered and drawn together.
My days have passed more swiftly than the web is cut by the weaver, and are consumed without any hope.Dies mei velocius transierunt quam a texente tela succiditur, et consumpti sunt absque ulla spe.Ὁ δὲ βίος μου ἔστιν ἐλαφρότερος λαλιᾶς, ἀπόλωλε δὲ ἐν κενῇ ἐλπίδι.
Remember that my life is but wind, and my eyes shall not return to see good things.
Nor shall the sight of man behold me: thy eyes are upon me, and I shall be no more.Nec aspiciet me visus hominis; oculi tui in me, et non subsistam.Οὐ περιβλέψεταί με ὀφθαλμὸς ὁρῶντός με, οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ἐν ἐμοί, καὶ οὐκ ἔτι εἰμί·
As a cloud is consumed, and passeth away: so he that shall go down to hell shall not come up.Sicut consumitur nubes, et pertransit, sic qui descenderit ad inferos, non ascendet.Ὥσπερ νέφος ἀποκαθαρθὲν ἀπʼ οὐρανοῦ· ἐὰν γὰρ ἄνθρωπος καταβῇ εἰς ᾅδην, οὐκ ἔτι μὴ ἀναβῇ,
Nor shall he return my more into his house, neither shall his place know him any more.Nec revertetur ultra in domum suam, neque cognoscet eum amplius locus eius.οὐδʼ οὐ μὴ ἐπιστρέψῃ εἰς τὸν ἴδιον οἶκον, οὐδʼ οὐ μὴ ἐπιγνῶ αὐτὸν ἔτι ὁ τόπος αὐτοῦ.
Wherefore I will not spare my month, I will speak in the affliction of my spirit: I will talk with the bitterness of my soul.Quapropter et ego non parcam ori meo: loquar in tribulatione spiritus mei; confabulabor cum amaritudine animae meae.Ἀτὰρ οὖν οὐδὲ ἐγὼ φείσομαι τῷ στόματί μου, λαλήσω ἐν ἀνάγκῃ ὤν, ἀνοίξω πικρίαν ψυχῆς μου συνεχόμενος.
Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou hast enclosed me in a prison?Numquid mare ego sum, aut cetus, quia circumdedisti me carcere?Πότερον θάλασσα εἰμὶ ἢ δράκων, ὅτι κατέταξας ἐπʼ ἐμὲ φυλακήν;
If I say: My bed shall comfort me, and I shall be relieved speaking with myself on my couch:Si dixero: Consolabitur me lectulus meus, et relevabor loquens mecum in strato meo:Εἴπα ὅτι παρακαλέσει με ἡ κλίνη μου, ἀνοίσω δὲ πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν ἰδίᾳ λόγον τῇ κοίτῃ μου.
Thou wilt frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions.terrebis me per somnia, et per visiones horrore concuties.Ἐκφοβεῖς με ἐνυπνίοις, καὶ ὁράμασί με καταπλήσσεις.
So that my soul rather chooseth hanging, and my bones death.Quam ob rem elegit suspendium anima mea, et mortem ossa mea.Ἀπαλλάξεις ἀπὸ πνεύματός μου τὴν ψυχήν μου, ἀπὸ δὲ θανάτου τὰ ὀστᾶ μου.
I have done with hope, I shall now live no longer: spare me, for my days are nothing.
What is a man that thou shouldst magnify him? or why dost thou set thy heart upon him?Quid est homo, quia magnificas eum? aut quid apponis erga eum cor tuum?Τί γάρ ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος, ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνας αὐτόν; ἢ ὅτι προσέχεις τὸν νοῦν εἰς αὐτόν;
Thou visitest him early in the morning, and thou provest him suddenly.Visitas eum diluculo, et subito probas illum.Ἢ ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ ποιήσῃ ἕως τὸ πρωΐ; καὶ εἰς ἀνάπαυσιν αὐτὸν κρινεῖς;
How long wilt thou not spare me, nor suffer me to swallow down my spittle?Usquequo non parcis mihi, nec dimittis me ut glutiam salivam meam?Ἕως τίνος οὐκ ἐᾷς με, οὐδὲ προΐῃ με, ἕως ἂν καταπίω τὸν πτύελόν μου;
I have sinned: what shall I do to thee, O keeper of men? why hast thou set me opposite to thee, and I am become burdensome to myself?Peccavi; quid faciam tibi, o custos hominum? quare posuisti me contrarium tibi, et factus sum mihimetipsi gravis?Εἰ ἐγὼ ἥμαρτον, τί δυνήσομαι πρᾶξαι, ὁ ἐπιστάμενος τὸν νοῦν τῶν ἀνθρώπων; διατί ἔθου με κατεντευκτήν σου, εἰμὶ δὲ ἐπὶ σοὶ φορτίον;
Why dost thou not remove my sin, and why dost thou not take away my iniquity? Behold now I shall sleep in the dust: and if thou seek me in the morning, I shall not be.Cur non tollis peccatum meum, et quare non aufers iniquitatem meam? ecce nunc in pulvere dormiam, et si mane me quaesieris, non subsistam.Διατί οὐκ ἐποιήσω τῆς ἀνομίας μου λήθην, καὶ καθαρισμὸν τῆς ἁμαρτίας μου; νυνὶ δὲ εἰς γῆν ἀπελεύσομαι, ὀρθρίζων δὲ οὐκ ἔτι εἰμί.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
