Job 4: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:Respondens autem Eliphaz Themanites, dixit:Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ἐλιφὰς ὁ Θαιμανίτης, λέγει,
If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?Si coeperimus loqui tibi, forsitan moleste accipies; sed conceptum sermonem tenere quis poterit?Μὴ πολλάκις σοι λελάληται ἐν κόπῳ; ἰσχὺν δὲ ῥημάτων σου τίς ὑποίσει;
Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:Ecce docuisti multos, et manus lassas roborasti;Εἰ γὰρ σὺ ἐνουθέτησας πολλοὺς, καὶ χεῖρας ἀσθενοῦς παρεκάλεσας,
Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:vacillantes confirmaverunt sermones tui, et genua trementia confortasti.ἀσθενοῦντάς τε ἐξανέστησας ῥήμασι, γόνασί τε ἀδυνατοῦσι θάρσος περιέθηκας.
But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.Nunc autem venit super te plaga, et defecisti; tetigit te, et conturbatus es.Νῦν δὲ ἥκει ἐπὶ σὲ πόνος καὶ ἥψατό σου, σὺ ἐσπούδασας.
Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?Ubi est timor tuus, fortitudo tua, patientia tua, et perfectio viarum tuarum?Πότερον οὐχ ὁ φόβος σου ἐστὶν ἐν ἀφροσύνῃ, καὶ ἡ ἐλπίς σου καὶ ἡ κακία τῆς ὁδοῦ σου;
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?Recordare, obsecro te, quis umquam innocens periit? aut quando recti deleti sunt?Μνήσθητι οὖν, τίς καθαρὸς ὢν ἀπώλετο, ἢ πότε ἀληθινοὶ ὁλόῤῥιζοι ἀπώλοντο;
On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,Quin potius vidi eos qui operantur iniquitatem, et seminant dolores, et metunt eos,Καθʼ ὃν τρόπον εἶδον τοὺς ἀροτριῶντας τὰ ἄτοπα, οἱ δὲ σπείροντες αὐτὰ ὀδύνας θεριοῦσιν ἑαυτοῖς.
Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.flante Deo perisse, et spiritu irae eius esse consumptos.Ἀπὸ προστάγματος Κυρίου ἀπολοῦνται, ἀπὸ δὲ πνεύματος ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀφανισθήσονται.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:Rugitus leonis, et vox leaenae, et dentes catulorum leonum contriti sunt.Σθένος λέοντος, φωνὴ δὲ λεαίνης, γαυρίαμα δὲ δρακόντων ἐσβέσθη.
The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.Porro ad me dictum est verbum absconditum, et quasi furtive suscepit auris mea venas susurri eius.Εἰ δέ τι ῥῆμα ἀληθινὸν ἐγεγόνει ἐν λόγοις σου, οὐθὲν ἄν σοι τούτων κακὸν ἀπήντησε· πότερον οὐ δέξεταί μου τὸ οὖς ἐξαίσια παρʼ αὐτοῦ;
In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,In horrore visionis nocturnae, quando solet sopor occupare homines,Φόβῳ δὲ καὶ ἤχῳ νυκτερινῇ ἐπιπίπτων φόβος ἐπʼ ἀνθρώπους,
Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:pavor tenuit me, et tremor, et omnia ossa mea perterrita sunt;φρίκη μοι συνήντησεν καὶ τρόμος, καὶ μεγάλως μου τὰ ὀστᾶ διέσεισε,
And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.et cum spiritus, me praesente, transiret, inhorruerunt pili carnis meae.καὶ πνεῦμα ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν μου ἐπῆλθεν, ἔφριξαν δέ μου τρίχες καὶ σάρκες.
There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:Stetit quidam, cuius non agnoscebam vultum, imago coram oculis meis, et vocem quasi aurae lenis audivi.Ἀνέστην καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνων, εἶδον καὶ οὐκ ἦν μορφὴ πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν μου, ἀλλʼ ἢ αὖραν καὶ φωνὴν ἤκουον.
Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?Numquid homo, Dei comparatione, iustificabitur? aut factore suo purior erit vir?Τί γάρ; μὴ καθαρὸς ἔσται βροτὸς ἐναντίον τοῦ Κυρίου; ἢ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἄμεμπτος ἀνήρ;
Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:Ecce qui serviunt ei, non sunt stabiles, et in angelis suis reperit pravitatem;Εἰ κατὰ παίδων αὐτοῦ οὐ πιστεύει, κατὰ δὲ ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ σκολιόν τι ἐπενόησε.
How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?quanto magis hi qui habitant domos luteas, qui terrenum habent fundamentum, consumentur velut a tinea?Τοὺς δὲ κατοικοῦντας οἰκίας πηλίνας, ἐξ ὧν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ πηλοῦ ἐσμεν, ἔπαισεν αὐτοὺς σητὸς τρόπον,
From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.De mane usque ad vesperam succidentur; et quia nullus intelligit, in aeternum peribunt.καὶ ἀπὸ πρωΐθεν μέχρι ἑσπέρας οὐκ ἔτι εἰσὶ, παρὰ τὸ μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς ἑαυτοῖς βοηθῆσαι, ἀπώλοντο.
And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.Qui autem reliqui fuerint, auferentur ex eis; morientur, et non in sapientia.Ἐνεφύσησε γὰρ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξηράνθησαν, ἀπώλοντο παρὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν αὐτοὺς σοφίαν.
