2 Chronicles 10: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
1And Roboam went to Sichem: for thither all Israel were assembled, to make him king.Profectus est autem Roboam in Sichem: illuc enim cunctus Israël convenerat ut constituerent eum regem.Καὶ ἦλθε Ῥοβοὰμ εἰς Συχὲμ, ὅτι εἰς Συχὲμ ἤρχετο πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτόν.
2And when Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (for he was fled thither from Solomon,) heard it, forthwith he returned.Quod cum audisset Ieroboam filius Nabat, qui erat in Aegypto (fugerat quippe illuc ante Salomonem), statim reversus est.Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν Ἱεροβοὰμ υἱὸς Ναβὰτ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, ὡς ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ προσώπου Σαλωμὼν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ κατῴκησεν Ἱεροβοὰμ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Ἱεροβοὰμ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου.
3And they sent for him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:Vocaveruntque eum, et venit cum universo Israël: et locuti sunt ad Roboam, dicentes:Καὶ ἀπέστειλαν καὶ ἐκάλεσαν αὐτόν· καὶ ἦλθεν Ἱεροβοὰμ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία πρὸς Ῥοβοὰμ, λέγοντες,
4Thy father oppressed us with a most grievous yoke, do thou govern us with a lighter hand than thy father, who laid upon us a heavy servitude, and ease some thing of the burden, that we may serve thee.
5And he said to them: Come to me again after three days. And when the people were gone,Qui ait: Post tres dies revertimini ad me.
6He took counsel with the ancients, who had stood before his father Solomon, while he yet lived, saying: What counsel give you to me, that I may answer the people?iniit consilium cum senibus qui steterant coram patre eius Salomone dum adhuc viveret, dicens: Quid datis consilii ut respondeam populo?Καὶ συνήγαγεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ῥοβοὰμ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους τοὺς ἑστηκότας ἐναντίον τοῦ Σαλωμὼν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ζῇν αὐτὸν, λέγων, πῶς ὑμεῖς βουλεύεσθε τοῦ ἀποκριθῆναι τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ λόγον;
7And they said to him: If thou please this people, and soothe them with kind words, they will be thy servants for ever.
8But he forsook the counsel of the ancients, and began to treat with the young men, that had been brought up with him, and were in his train.At ille reliquit consilium senum, et cum iuvenibus tractare coepit, qui cum eo nutriti fuerant, et erant in comitatu illius.Καὶ κατέλιπε τὴν βουλὴν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων, οἳ συνεβουλεύσαντο αὐτῷ· καὶ συνεβουλεύσατο μετὰ τῶν παιδαρίων τῶν συνεκτραφέντων μετʼ αὐτοῦ τῶν ἑστηκότων ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ.
9And he said to them: What seemeth good to you? or what shall I answer this people, who have said to me: Ease the yoke which thy father laid upon us?Dixitque ad eos: Quid vobis videtur? vel respondere quid debeo populo huic, qui dixit mihi: Subleva iugum quod imposuit nobis pater tuus?Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, τί ὑμεῖς βουλεύεσθε, καὶ ἀποκριθήσομαι λόγον τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ, οἳ ἐλάλησαν πρὸς μὲ, λέγοντες, ἄνες ἀπὸ τοῦ ζυγοῦ οὗ ἔδωκεν ὁ πατήρ σου ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς;
10But they answered as young men, and brought up with him in pleasures, and said: Thus shalt thou speak to the people, that said to thee: Thy father made our yoke heavy, do thou ease it: thus shalt thou answer them: My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.At illi responderunt ut iuvenes, et nutriti cum eo in deliciis, atque dixerunt: Sic loqueris populo qui dixit tibi: Pater tuus aggravavit iugum nostrum, tu subleva: et sic respondebis ei: Minimus digitus meus grossior est lumbis patris mei.Καὶ ἐλάλησαν αὐτῷ τὰ παιδάρια τὰ ἐκτραφέντα μετʼ αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες, οὕτως λαλήσεις τῷ λαῷ τῷ λαλήσαντι πρὸς σὲ, λέγων, ὁ πατήρ σου ἐβάρυνε τὸν ζυγὸν ἡμῶν, καὶ σὺ ἄφες ἀφʼ ἡμῶν· οὕτως ἐρεῖς, ὁ μικρὸς δάκτυλός μου παχύτερος τῆς ὀσφύος τοῦ πατρός μου.
11My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, and I will add more weight to it: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.
12So Jeroboam, and all the people came to Roboam the third day, as he commanded them.
13And the king answered roughly, leaving the counsel of the ancients.
14And he spoke according to the advice of the young men: My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, which I will make heavier: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.locutusque est iuxta iuvenum voluntatem: Pater meus grave vobis imposuit iugum, quod ego gravius faciam; pater meus cecidit vos flagellis, ego vero caedam vos scorpionibus.καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὴν βουλὴν τῶν νεωτέρων, λέγων, ὁ πατήρ μου ἐβάρυνε τὸν ζυγὸν ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐγὼ προσθήσω ἐπʼ αὐτόν· ὁ πατήρ μου ἐπαίδευσεν ὑμᾶς ἐν μάστιξι, καὶ ἐγὼ παιδεύσω ὑμᾶς ἐν σκορπίοις.
15And he condescended not to the people’s requests: for it was the will of God, that his word might be fulfilled which he had spoken by the hand of Ahias the Silonite to Jeroboam the son of Nabat.
16And all the people upon the king’s speaking roughly, said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel, and do thou, O David, feed thy own house. And Israel went away to their dwellings.
17But Roboam reigned over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Juda.Super filios autem Israël qui habitabant in civitatibus Iuda, regnavit Roboam.Καὶ ἄνδρες Ἰσραὴλ καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν πόλεσιν Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν ἐπʼ αὐτῶν Ῥοβοάμ.
18And king Roboam sent Aduram, who was over the tributes, and the children of Israel stoned him, and he died: and king Roboam made haste to gee up into his chariot, and fled into Jerusalem.Misitque rex Roboam Aduram, qui praeerat tributis, et lapidaverunt eum filii Israël, et mortuus est: porro rex Roboam currum festinavit ascendere, et fugit in Ierusalem.Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς Ῥοβοὰμ ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Ἀδωνιρὰμ τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ φόρου, καὶ ἐλιθοβόλησαν αὐτὸν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ λίθοις, καὶ ἀπέθανε· καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ῥοβοὰμ ἔσπευσε τοῦ ἀναβῆναι εἰς τὸ ἅρμα, τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ.
19And Israel revolted from the house of David unto this day.Recessitque Israël a domo David, usque ad diem hanc.Καὶ ἠθέτησεν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Δαυὶδ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
