Maccabees 3: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Then his son Judas, called Machabeus, rose up in his stead.Καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰούδας ὁ καλούμενος Μακκαβαῖος υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντʼ αὐτοῦ.
And all his brethren helped him, and all they that had joined themselves to his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.Καὶ ἐβοήθουν αὐτῷ πάντες οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντες ὅσοι ἐκολλήθησαν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπολέμουν τὸν πόλεμον Ἰσραὴλ μετʼ εὐφροσύνης.
And he got his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike armour about him in battles, and protected the camp with his sword.Καὶ ἐπλάτυνε δόξαν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνεδύσατο θώρακα ὡς γίγας, καὶ συνεζώσατο τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ τὰ πολεμικά· καὶ συνεστήσατο πολέμους σκεπάζων παρεμβολὴν ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ.
In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion’s whelp roaring for his prey.Καὶ ὡμοιώθη λέοντι ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὡς σκύμνος ἐρευγόμενος εἰς θήραν.
And he pursued the wicked and sought them out, and them that troubled his people he burnt with fire:Καὶ ἐδίωξεν ἀνόμους ἐξερευνῶν, καὶ τοὺς ταράσσοντας τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἐφλόγισε·
And his enemies were driven away for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled: and salvation prospered in his hand.Καὶ συνεστάλησαν οἱ ἄνομοι ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐργάται τῆς ἀνομίας συνεταράχθησαν, καὶ εὐοδώθη σωτηρία ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ.
And he grieved many kings, and made Jacob glad with his works, and his memory is blessed for ever.Καὶ ἐπίκρανε βασιλεῖς πολλούς, καὶ εὔφρανε τὸν Ἰακὼβ ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτοῦ εἰς εὐλογίαν.
And he went through the cities of Juda, and destroyed the wicked out of them, and turned away wrath from Israel.Καὶ διῆλθεν ἐν πόλεσιν Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐξωλόθρευσεν ἀσεβεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν ὀργὴν ἀπὸ Ἰσραήλ.
And he was renowned even to the utmost part of the earth, and he gathered them that were perishing.Καὶ ὠνομάσθη ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς, καὶ συνήγαγεν ἀπολλυμένους.
And Apollonius gathered together the Gentiles, and a numerous and great army from Samaria, to make war against Israel.Καὶ συνήγαγεν Ἀπολλώνιος ἔθνη, καὶ ἀπὸ Σαμαρείας δύναμιν μεγάλην, τοῦ πολεμῆσαι πρὸς Ἰσραήλ.
And Judas understood it, and went forth to meet him: and he overthrew him, and killed him: and many fell down slain, the rest fled away.Καὶ ἔγνω Ἰούδας, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτόν· καὶ ἔπεσον τραυματίαι πολλοὶ, καὶ οἱ ἐπίλοιποι ἔφυγον.
And he took their spoils, and Judas took the sword of Apollonius, and fought with it all his lifetime.Καὶ ἔλαβε τὰ σκῦλα αὐτῶν, καὶ τὴν μάχαιραν Ἀπολλωνίου ἔλαβεν Ἰούδας, καὶ ἦν πολεμῶν ἐν αὐτῇ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.
And Seron captain of the army of Syria heard that Judas had assembled a company of the faithful, and a congregation with him,Καὶ ἤκουσε Σήρων, ὁ ἄρχων τῆς δυνάμεως Συρίας, ὅτι ἤθροισεν Ἰούδας ἄθροισμα, καὶ ἐκκλησίαν πιστῶν μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἐκπορευομένων εἰς πόλεμον·
And he said: I will get me a name, and will be glorified in the kingdom, and will overthrow Judas, and those that are with him, that have despised the edict of the king.Καὶ εἶπε, ποιήσω ἐμαυτῷ ὄνομα καὶ δοξασθήσομαι ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ, καὶ πολεμήσω τὸν Ἰούδαν καὶ τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ, τοὺς ἐξουδενοῦντας τὸν λόγον τοῦ βασιλέως.
And he made himself ready: and the host of the wicked went up with him, strong succours, to be revenged of the children of Israel.Καὶ προσέθετο τοῦ ἀναβῆναι· καὶ ἀνέβη μετʼ αὐτοῦ παρεμβολὴ ἀσεβῶν ἰσχυρὰ βοηθῆσαι αὐτῷ, καὶ ποιῆσαι τὴν ἐκδίκησιν ἐν υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ.
And they approached even as far as Bethoron: and Judas went forth to meet him, with a small company.Καὶ ἤγγισαν ἕως ἀναβάσεως Βαιθωρών· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰούδας εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ ὀλιγοστός.
But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas: How shall we, being few, be able to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, and we are ready to faint with fasting today?Ὡς δὲ ἴδον τὴν παρεμβολὴν ἐρχομένην εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς, εἶπον τῷ Ἰούδα, πῶς δυνησόμεθα ὀλιγοστοὶ ὄντες πολεμῆσαι πρὸς πλῆθος τοσοῦτον ἰσχυρόν; καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐκλελύμεθα ἀσιτοῦντες σήμερον.
And Judas said: It is an easy matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few: and there is no difference in the sight of the God of heaven to deliver with a great multitude, or with a small company:Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰούδας, εὔκοπόν ἐστι συγκλεισθῆναι πολλοὺς ἐν χερσὶν ὀλίγων· καὶ οὐκ ἔστι διαφορὰ ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ σώζειν ἐν πολλοῖς ἢ ἐν ὀλίγοις.
For the success of war is not in the multitude of the army, but strength cometh from heaven.Ὅτι οὐκ ἐν πλήθει δυνάμεως νίκη πολέμου ἐστὶν, ἀλλʼ ἢ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἡ ἰσχύς.
They come against us with an insolent multitude, and with pride, to destroy us, and our wives, and our children, and to take our spoils.Αὐτοὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς ἡμᾶς ἐν πλήθει ὕβρεως καὶ ἀνομίας, τοῦ ἐξᾶραι ἡμᾶς καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας ἡμῶν, καὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν, τοῦ σκυλεῦσαι ἡμᾶς.
But we will fight for our lives and our laws:Ἡμεῖς δὲ πολεμοῦμεν περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν νομίμων ἡμῶν.
And the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: but as for you, fear them not.Καὶ αὐτὸς συντρίψει αὐτοὺς πρὸ προσώπου ἡμῶν· ὑμεῖς δὲ μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπʼ αὐτῶν.
And as soon as he had made an end of speaking, he rushed suddenly upon them: and Seron and his host were overthrown before him:Ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν, ἐνήλατο εἰς αὐτοὺς ἄφνω, καὶ συνετρίβη Σήρων καὶ ἡ παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ.
And he pursued him by the descent of Bethoron even to the plain, and there fell of them eight hundred men, and the rest fled into the land of the Philistines.Καὶ ἐδίωκον αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ καταβάσει Βαιθωρῶν ἕως τοῦ πεδίου· καὶ ἔπεσον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν εἰς ἄνδρας ὀκτακοσίους· οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἔφυγον εἰς γῆν Φυλιστιείμ.
And the fear of Judas and of his brethren, and the dread of them fell upon all the nations round about them.Καὶ ἤρξατο ὁ φόβος Ἰούδα καὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ πτόησις ἐπιπίπτειν ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη τὰ κύκλῳ αὐτῶν.
And his fame came to the king, and all nations told of the battles of Judas.Καὶ ἤγγισεν ἕως τοῦ βασιλέως τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὑπὲρ τῶν παρατάξεων Ἰούδα ἐξηγεῖτο πᾶν ἔθνος.
Now when king Antiochus heard these words, he was angry in his mind: and he sent and gathered the forces of all his kingdom, an exceeding strong army.Ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν Ἀντίοχος ὁ βασιλεὺς τοὺς λόγους τούτους, ὠργίσθη θυμῷ· καὶ ἀπέστειλε καὶ συνήγαγε τὰς δυνάμεις πάσας τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ, παρεμβολὴν ἰσχυρὰν σφόδρα.
And he opened his treasury, and gave out pay to the army for a year: and he commanded them, that they should be ready for all things.Καὶ ἤνοιξε τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν ὀψώνια ταῖς δυνάμεσιν αὐτοῦ εἰς ἐνιαυτόν· καὶ ἐνετείλατο εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἑτοίμους εἰς πᾶσαν χρείαν.
And he perceived that the money of his treasures failed, and that the tributes of the country were small because of the dissension, and the evil that he had brought upon the land, that he might take away the laws of old times:Καὶ εἶδεν ὅτι ἐξέλιπε τὸ ἀργύριον ἀπὸ τῶν θησαυρῶν, καὶ οἱ φορολόγοι τῆς χώρας ὀλίγοι, χάριν τῆς διχοστασίας καὶ πληγῆς ἧς κατεσκεύασεν ἐν τῇ γῇ, τοῦ ἆραι τὰ νόμιμα ἃ ἦσαν ἀφʼ ἡμερῶν τῶν πρώτων.
And he feared that he should not have as formerly enough, for charges and gifts, which he had given before with a liberal hand: for he had abounded more than the kings that had been before him.Καὶ εὐλαβήθη μὴ οὐκ ἔχῃ ὡς ἅπαξ καὶ δὶς εἰς τὰς δαπάνας καὶ τὰ δόματα ἃ ἐδίδου ἔμπροσθεν δαψιλεῖ χειρὶ, καὶ ἐπερίσσευσεν ὑπέρ τοὺς βασιλεῖς τοὺς ἔμπροσθεν.
And he was greatly perplexed in mind, and purposed to go into Persia, and to take tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.Καὶ ἠπορεῖτο τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ σφόδρα, καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο τοῦ πορευθῆναι εἰς τὴν Περσίδα, καὶ λαβεῖν τοὺς φόρους τῶν χωρῶν, καὶ συναγαγεῖν ἀργύριον πολύ.
And he left Lysias, a nobleman of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the kingdom, from the river Euphrates even to the river of Egypt:Καὶ κατέλιπε Λυσίαν ἄνθρωπον ἔνδοξον καὶ ἀπὸ γένους τῆς βασιλείας, ἐπὶ τῶν πραγμάτων τοῦ βασιλέως ἀπὸ τοῦ ποταμοῦ Εὐφράτου ἕως τῶν ὁρίων Αἰγύπτου,
And to bring up his son Antiochus, till he came again.καὶ τρέφειν Ἀντίοχον τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἕως τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι αὐτόν.
And he delivered to him half the army, and the elephants: and he gave him charge concerning all that he would have done, and concerning the inhabitants of Judea, and Jerusalem:Καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτῷ τὰς ἡμίσεις τῶν δυνάμεων καὶ τοὺς ἐλέφαντας· καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐβούλετο, καὶ περὶ τῶν κατοικούντων τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ,
And that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away the memory of them from that place:ἀποστεῖλαι ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς δύναμιν, τοῦ ἐκτρίψαι καὶ ἐξᾶραι τὴν ἰσχὺν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμα Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἆραι τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ τόπου,
And that he should settle strangers to dwell in all their coasts, and divide their land by lot.καὶ κατοικῆσαι υἱοὺς ἀλλογενεῖς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῶν, καὶ κατακληροδοτῆσαι τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν.
So the king took the half of the army that remained, and went forth from Antioch the chief city of his kingdom, in the hundred and forty-seventh year: and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through the higher countries.Καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς παρέλαβε τὰς ἡμίσεις τῶν δυνάμεων τὰς καταλειφθείσας, καὶ ἀπῇρεν ἀπὸ Ἀντιοχείας ἀπὸ πόλεως βασιλείας αὐτοῦ, ἔτους ἑβδόμου καὶ τεσσαρακοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ· καὶ διεπέρασε τὸν Εὐφράτην ποταμὸν, καὶ διεπορεύετο τὰς ἐπάνω χώρας.
Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenus, and Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends.Καὶ ἐπέλεξε Λυσίας Πτολεμαῖον τὸν Δορυμένους, καὶ Νικάνορα, καὶ Γοργίαν, ἄνδρας δυνατοὺς τῶν φίλων τοῦ βασιλέως.
And he sent with them forty thousand men, and seven thousand horsemen: to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it according to the king’s orders.Καὶ ἀπέστειλε μετʼ αὐτῶν τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν καὶ ἑπτακισχιλίαν ἵππον, τοῦ ἐλθεῖν εἰς γῆν Ἰούδα, καὶ καταφθεῖραι αὐτὴν, κατὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ βασιλέως.
So they went forth with all their power, and came, and pitched near Emmaus in the plain country.Καὶ ἀπῇραν σὺν πάσῃ τῇ δυνάμει αὐτῶν, καὶ ἦλθον, καὶ παρενέβαλον πλησίον Ἐμμαοὺμ ἐν τῇ γῇ τῇ πεδινῇ.
And the merchants of the countries heard the fame of them: and they took silver and gold in abundance, and servants: and they came into the camp, to buy the children of Israel for slaves: and there were joined to them the forces of Syria, and of the land of the strangers.Καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἔμποροι τῆς χώρας τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔλαβον ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον πολὺ σφόδρα καὶ παῖδας, καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν τοῦ λαβεῖν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ εἰς παῖδας· καὶ προσετέθησαν πρὸς αὐτοὺς δύναμις Συρίας καὶ γῆς ἀλλοφύλων.
And Judas and his brethren saw that evils were multiplied, and that the armies approached to their borders: and they knew the orders the king had given to destroy the people and utterly abolish them.Καὶ εἶδεν Ἰούδας καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐπληθύνθη τὰ κακὰ, καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν τοὺς λόγους τοῦ βασιλέως οὓς ἐνετείλατο ποιῆσαι τῷ λαῷ εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ συντέλειαν·
And they said every man to his neighbour: Let us raise up the low condition of our people, and let us fight for our people, and our sanctuary.καὶ εἶπεν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ, ἀναστήσωμεν τὴν καθαίρεσιν τοῦ λαοῦ ἡμῶν, καὶ πολεμήσωμεν περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν ἁγίων.
And the assembly was gathered that they might be ready for battle: and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.Καὶ συνηθροίσθη ἡ συναγωγὴ τοῦ εἶναι ἑτοίμους εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ τοῦ προσεύξασθαι, καὶ αἰτῆσαι ἔλεον καὶ οἰκτιρμούς.
Now Jerusalem was not inhabited, but was like a desert: there was none of her children that went in or out: and the sanctuary was trodden down: and the children of strangers were in the castle, there was the habitation of the Gentiles: and joy was taken away from Jacob, and the pipe and harp ceased there.Καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἦν ἀοίκητος ὡς ἔρημος, οὐκ ἦν ὁ εἰσπορευόμενος καὶ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐκ τῶν γεννημάτων αὐτῆς· καὶ τὸ ἁγίασμα καταπατούμενον, καὶ υἱοὶ ἀλλογενῶν ἐν τῇ ἄκρᾳ, κατάλυμα τοῖς ἔθνεσι· καὶ ἐξῄρθη τέρψις ἐξ Ἰακὼβ, καὶ ἐξέλιπεν αὐλὸς καὶ κινύρα.
And they assembled together, and came to Maspha over against Jerusalem: for in Maspha was a place of prayer heretofore in Israel.Καὶ συνήχθησαν, καὶ ἤλθοσαν εἰς Μασσηφὰ κατέναντι Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ὅτι τόπος προσευχῆς εἰς Μασσηφὰ τὸ πρότερον τῷ Ἰσραήλ.
And they fasted that day, and put on haircloth, and put ashes upon their heads: and they rent their garments:Καὶ ἐνήστευσαν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, καὶ περιεβάλοντο σάκκους καὶ σποδὸν ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ διέῤῥηξαν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν.
And they laid open the books of the law, in which the Gentiles searched for the likeness of their idols:Καὶ ἐξεπέτασαν τὸ βιβλίον τοῦ νόμου, περὶ ὧν ἐξηρεύνων τὰ ἔθνη τὰ ὁμοιώματα τῶν εἰδώλων αὐτῶν.
And they brought the priestly ornaments, and the firstfruits and tithes, and stirred up the Nazarites that had fulfilled their days:Καὶ ἤνεγκαν τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς ἱερωσύνης, καὶ τὰ πρωτογεννήματα, καὶ τὰς δεκάτας· καὶ ἤγειραν τοὺς Ναζαραίους, οἳ ἐπλήρωσαν τὰς ἡμέρας.
And they cried with a loud voice toward heaven, saying: What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them?Καὶ ἐβόησαν φωνῇ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, λέγοντες, τί ποιήσωμεν τούτοις, καὶ ποῦ αὐτοὺς ἀπαγάγωμεν;
For thy holies are trodden down, and are profaned, and thy priests are in mourning, and are brought low.Καὶ τὰ ἅγιά σου καταπεπάτηται, καὶ βεβήλωται· καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς σου ἐν πένθει καὶ ταπεινώσει.
And behold the nations are come together against us to destroy us: thou knowest what they intend against us.Καὶ ἰδοὺ τὰ ἔθνη συνῆκται ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς τοῦ ἐξᾶραι ἡμᾶς· σὺ οἶδας ἃ λογίζονται ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς.
How shall we be able to stand before their face, unless thou, O God, help us?Πῶς δυνησόμεθα ὑποστῆναι κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν, ἐὰν μὴ σὺ βοηθήσῃς ἡμῖν;
Then they sounded with trumpets, and cried out with a loud voice.Καὶ ἐσάλπισαν ταῖς σάλπιγξι, καὶ ἐβόησαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ.
And after this Judas appointed captains over the people, over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.Καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο κατέστησεν Ἰούδας ἡγουμένους τοῦ λαοῦ, χιλιάρχους, καὶ ἑκατοντάρχους, καὶ πεντηκοντάρχους, καὶ δεκάρχους.
And he said to them that were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, that they should return every man to his house, according to the law.Καὶ εἶπον τοῖς οἰκοδομοῦσιν οἰκίας, καὶ μνηστευομένους γυναῖκας, καὶ φυτεύουσιν ἀμπελῶνας, καὶ δειλοῖς, ἀποστρέφειν ἕκαστον εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, κατὰ τὸν νόμον.
So they removed the camp, and pitched on the south side of Emmaus.Καὶ ἀπῇρεν ἡ παρεμβολὴ, καὶ παρενέβαλε κατὰ Νότον Ἐμμαούμ.
And Judas said: Gird yourselves, and be valiant men, and be ready against the morning, that you may fight with these nations that are assembled against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰούδας, περιζώσασθε, καὶ γίνεσθε εἰς υἱοὺς δυνατοὺς, καὶ γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι εἰς τοπρωῒ τοῦ πολεμῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι τούτοις, τοῖς ἐπισυνηγμένοις ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ἐξᾶραι ἡμᾶς καὶ τὰ ἅγια ἡμῶν.
For it is better for us to die in battle, than to see the evils of our nation, and of the holies:Ὅτι κρεῖσσον ἡμᾶς ἀποθανεῖν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, ἢ ἐπιδεῖν ἐπὶ τὰ κακὰ τοῦ ἔθνους ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν ἁγίων·
Nevertheless as it shall be the will of God in heaven so be it done.Ὡς δʼ ἂν ᾖ θέλημα ἐν οὐρανῷ, οὕτω ποιήσει.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
