Ephesians 2: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Greek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
And you, when you were dead in your offences, and sins,Et vos, cum essetis mortui delictis et peccatis vestris,Καὶ ὑμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασι καὶ ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις,
Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of this air, of the spirit that now worketh on the children of unbelief:in quibus aliquando ambulastis secundum saeculum mundi huius, secundum principem potestatis aëris huius, spiritus, qui nunc operatur in filios diffidentiae,ἐν αἷς ποτε περιεπατήσατε κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, κατὰ τὸν ἄρχοντα τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος, τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ νῦν ἐνεργοῦντος ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀπειθείας·
In which also we all conversed in time past, in the desires of our flesh, fulfilling the will of the flesh and of our thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:in quibus et nos omnes aliquando conversati sumus in desideriis carnis nostrae, facientes voluntatem carnis et cogitationum, et eramus natura filii irae, sicut et ceteri:ἐν οἷς καὶ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἀνεστράφημέν ποτε ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῆς σαρκὸς ἡμῶν, ποιοῦντες τὰ θελήματα τῆς σαρκὸς καὶ τῶν διανοιῶν, καὶ ἦμεν τέκνα φύσει ὀργῆς, ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποί· —
But God, (who is rich in mercy,) for his exceeding charity wherewith he loved us,Deus autem, qui dives est in misericordia, propter nimiam caritatem suam, qua dilexit nos,ὁ δὲ Θεὸς πλούσιος ὢν ἐν ἐλέει, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ, (by whose grace you are saved,)et cum essemus mortui peccatis, convivificavit nos in Christo (cuius gratia estis salvati),καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασι συνεζωοποίησε τῷ Χριστῷ· χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι·
And hath raised us up together, and hath made us sit together in the heavenly places, through Christ Jesus.et conresuscitavit, et consedere fecit in caelestibus in Christo Iesu:καὶ συνήγειρε καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ,
That he might shew in the ages to come the abundant riches of his grace, in his bounty towards us in Christ Jesus.ut ostenderet in saeculis supervenientibus abundantes divitias gratiae suae, in bonitate super nos in Christo Iesu.ἵνα ἐνδείξηται ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσι τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις τὸν ὑπερβάλλοντα πλοῦτον τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ ἐν χρηστότητι ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God;Gratia enim estis salvati per fidem, et hoc non ex vobis: Dei enim donum est:τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι διὰ τῆς πίστεως· καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν, Θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον,
Not of works, that no man may glory.non ex operibus, ut ne quis glorietur.οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.Ipsius enim sumus factura, creati in Christo Iesu in operibus bonis, quae praeparavit Deus ut in illis ambulemus.αὐτοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν ποίημα, κτισθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐπὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς, οἷς προητοίμασεν ὁ Θεὸς ἵνα ἐν αὐτοῖς περιπατήσωμεν.
For which cause be mindful that you, being heretofore Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called circumcision in the flesh, made by hands;Propter quod memores estote quod aliquando vos gentes in carne, qui dicimini praeputium ab ea quae dicitur circumcisio in carne, manu facta:Διὸ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ὑμεῖς ποτε τὰ ἔθνη ἐν σαρκί, οἱ λεγόμενοι ἀκροβυστία ὑπὸ τῆς λεγομένης περιτομῆς ἐν σαρκὶ χειροποιήτου,
That you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the conversation of Israel, and strangers to the testament, having no hope of the promise, and without God in this world.quia eratis illo in tempore sine Christo, alienati a conversatione Israël, et hospites testamentorum, promissionis spem non habentes, et sine Deo in hoc mundo.ὅτι ἦτε ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ χωρὶς Χριστοῦ, ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς πολιτείας τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ξένοι τῶν διαθηκῶν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας, ἐλπίδα μὴ ἔχοντες καὶ ἄθεοι ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ.
But now in Christ Jesus, you, who some time were afar off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ.Nunc autem in Christo Iesu, vos, qui aliquando eratis longe, facti estis prope in sanguine Christi.νυνὶ δὲ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὑμεῖς οἱ ποτὲ ὄντες μακρὰν ἐγγὺς ἐγενήθητε ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ Χριστοῦ.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and breaking down the middle wall of partition, the enmities in his flesh:Ipse enim est pax nostra, qui fecit utraque unum, et medium parietem maceriae solvens, inimicitias in carne sua,αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἡ εἰρήνη ἡμῶν, ὁ ποιήσας τὰ ἀμφότερα ἓν καὶ τὸ μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ λύσας,
Making void the law of commandments contained in decrees; that he might make the two in himself into one new man, making peace;legem mandatorum decretis evacuans, ut duos condat in semetipso in unum novum hominem, faciens pacem:τὴν ἔχθραν, ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ αὐτοῦ τὸν νόμον τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐν δόγμασι καταργήσας, ἵνα τοὺς δύο κτίσῃ ἐν ἑαυτῷ εἰς ἕνα καινὸν ἄνθρωπον ποιῶν εἰρήνην,
And might reconcile both to God in one body by the cross, killing the enmities in himself.et reconciliet ambos in uno corpore, Deo per crucem, interficiens inimicitias in semetipso.καὶ ἀποκαταλλάξῃ τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι τῷ Θεῷ διὰ τοῦ σταυροῦ, ἀποκτείνας τὴν ἔχθραν ἐν αὐτῷ·
And coming, he preached peace to you that were afar off, and peace to them that were nigh.
For by him we have access both in one Spirit to the Father.Quoniam per ipsum habemus accessum ambo in uno Spiritu ad Patrem.ὅτι δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἔχομεν τὴν προσαγωγὴν οἱ ἀμφότεροι ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα.
Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners; but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and the domestics of God,Ergo iam non estis hospites, et advenae: sed estis cives sanctorum, et domestici Dei,ἄρα οὖν οὐκέτι ἐστὲ ξένοι καὶ πάροικοι, ἀλλὰ συμπολῖται τῶν ἁγίων καὶ οἰκεῖοι τοῦ Θεοῦ,
Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone:superaedificati super fundamentum apostolorum, et prophetarum, ipso summo angulari lapide Christo Iesu:ἐποικοδομηθέντες ἐπὶ τῷ θεμελίῳ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν, ὄντος ἀκρογωνιαίου αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,
In whom all the building, being framed together, groweth up into an holy temple in the Lord.in quo omnis aedificatio constructa crescit in templum sanctum in Domino,ἐν ᾧ πᾶσα οἰκοδομὴ συναρμολογουμένη αὔξει εἰς ναὸν ἅγιον ἐν Κυρίῳ·
In whom you also are built together into an habitation of God in the Spirit.in quo et vos coaedificamini in habitaculum Dei in Spiritu.ἐν ᾧ καὶ ὑμεῖς συνοικοδομεῖσθε εἰς κατοικητήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν Πνεύματι.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
