Sirach 14: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Blessed is the man that hath not slipped by a word out of his mouth, and is not pricked with the remorse of sin.Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς οὐκ ὠλίσθησεν ἐν στόματι αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ κατενύγη ἐν λύπῃ ἁμαρτίας.
Happy is he that hath had no sadness of his mind, and who is not fallen from his hope.Μακάριος οὗ οὐ κατέγνω ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὃς οὐκ ἔπεσεν ἀπὸ τῆς ἐλπίδος αὐτοῦ.
Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold?Ἀνδρὶ μικρολόγῳ οὐ καλὸς ὁ πλοῦτος, καὶ ἀνθρώπῳ βασκάνῳ ἱνατί χρήματα;
He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting.Ὁ συνάγων ἀπὸ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ, συνάγει ἄλλοις, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς αὐτοῦ τρυφήσουσιν ἕτεροι.
He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods.Ὁ πονηρὸς ἑαυτῷ, τίνι ἀγαθὸς ἔσται; καὶ οὐ μὴ εὐφρανθήσεται ἐν τοῖς χρήμασιν αὐτοῦ.
There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness:Τοῦ βασκαίνοντος ἑαυτὸν οὐκ ἔστι πονηρότερος, καὶ τοῦτο ἀνταπόδομα τῆς κακίας αὐτοῦ·
And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness.κᾂν εὐποιῇ, ἐν λήθῃ ποιεῖ, καὶ ἐπʼ ἐσχάτων ἐκφαίνει τὴν κακίαν αὐτοῦ.
The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul.Πονηρὸς ὁ βασκαίνων ὀφθαλμῷ, ἀποστρέφων πρόσωπον καὶ ὁ ὑπερορῶν ψυχάς.
The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up.Πλεονέκτου ὀφθαλμὸς οὐκ ἐμπίπλαται μερίδι, καὶ ἀδικία πονηρὰ ἀναξηρανει ψυχήν.
An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table.Ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρὸς φθονερὸς ἐπʼ ἄρτῳ, καὶ ἐλλιπὴς ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης αὐτοῦ.
My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings.Τέκνον, καθὼς ἐὰν ἔχεις εὐποίει σεαυτόν, καὶ προσφορὰς Κυρίῳ ἀξίως πρόσαγε.
Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die.Μνήσθητι ὅτι θάνατος οὐ χρονιεῖ, καὶ διαθήκη ᾅδου οὐχ ὑπεδείχθη σοι.
Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor.Πρίν σε τελευτῆσαι εὐποίει φίλῳ, καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἰσχύν σου ἔκτεινον καὶ δὸς αὐτῷ.
Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee.Μὴ ἀφυστερήσῃς ἀπὸ ἀγαθῆς ἡμέρας, καὶ μερὶς ἐπιθυμίας ἀγαθῆς μή σε παρελθάτω.
Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours?Οὐχὶ ἑτέρῳ καταλείψεις τοὺς πόνους σου, καὶ τοὺς κόπους σου εἰς διαίρεσιν κλήρου;
Give and take, and justify thy soul.Δὸς καὶ λάβε, καὶ ἀπάτησον τὴν ψυχήν σου, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ᾅδου ζητῆσαι τρυφήν.
Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food.Πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς ἱμάτιον παλαιοῦται, ἡ γὰρ διαθήκη ἀπʼ αἰῶνος θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ.
All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree.Ὡς φύλλον θάλλον ἐπὶ δένδρου δασέος, τὰ μὲν καταβάλλει, ἀλλα δὲ φύει· οὕτως γενεὰ σαρκὸς καὶ αἵματος, ἡ μὲν τελευτᾷ, ἑτέρα δὲ γεννᾶται.
Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.Πᾶν ἔργον σηπόμενον ἐκλείπει, καὶ ὁ ἐργαζόμενος αὐτὸ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἀπελεύσεται.
Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it.Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ἐν σοφίᾳ τελευτήσει, καὶ ὃς ἐν συνέσει αὐτοῦ διαλεχθήσεται·
And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein.ὡ διανοούμενος τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀποκρύφοις αὐτῆς νοηθήσεται.
Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God.Ἔξελθε ὀπίσω αὐτῆς ὡς ἰχνευτὴς, καὶ ἐν ταῖς εἰσόδοις αὐτῆς ἐνέδρευε.
He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways:Ὁ παρακύπτων διὰ τῶν θυρίδων αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν θυρωμάτων αὐτῆς ἀκροάσεται·
He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door:ὁ καταλύων σύνεγγυς τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῆς, καὶ πήξει πάσσαλον ἐν τοῖς τοίχοις αὐτῆς.
He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever.Στήσει τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ κατὰ χεῖρας αὐτῆς, καὶ καταλύσει ἐν καταλύματι ἀγαθῶν.
He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches:Θήσει τὰ τέκνα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ σκέπῃ αὐτῆς, καὶ ὑπὸ τοὺς κλάδους αὐτῆς αὐλισθήσεται.
He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory.Σκεπασθήσεται ὑπʼ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ καύματος, καὶ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτῆς καταλύσει.
