Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus. In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Iesu:Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετράρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ
And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.et ait pueris suis: Hic est Ioannes Baptista: ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo.καὶ εἶπε τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ· οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής· αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ.
For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother’s wife.Herodes enim tenuit Ioannem, et alligavit eum: et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui.ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην ἔδησεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔθετο ἐν φυλακῇ διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.
For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.
And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.
But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi:γενεσίων δὲ ἀγομένων τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσε τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ·
Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo.ὅθεν μεθ᾽ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται.
But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist. At illa praemonita a matre sua: Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Ioannis Baptistae.ἡ δέ,
And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.Misitque et decollavit Ioannem in carcere.καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισε τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.Et allatum est caput eius in disco, et datum est puellae, et attulit matri suae.καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ ἤνεγκε τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.
Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.Quod cum audisset Iesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum: et cum audissent turbae, secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ᾽ ἰδίαν· καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων.
And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli eius, dicentes: Desertus est locus, et hora iam praeteriit: dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas.ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν· ἀπόλυσον τοὺς ὄχλους, ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα.
But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.
They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.
He said to them: Bring them hither to me.Qui ait eis: Afferte mihi illos huc.ὁ δὲ εἶπε· φέρετέ μοι αὐτοὺς ὧδε.
And when he had commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.Et cum iussisset turbam discumbere super foenum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis.καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοὺς χόρτους, λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας, ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησε, καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκε τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους, οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις.
And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt.
And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.
And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.Et statim compulit Iesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et praecedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν, ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους.
And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare.
But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.navicula autem in medio mari iactabatur fluctibus: erat enim contrarius ventus.τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη μέσον τῆς θαλάσσης ἦν, βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων· ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος.
And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.
And they seeing him walk upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.
And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.
And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.Respondens autem Petrus, dixit: Domine, si tu es, iube me ad te venire super aquas.ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπε· Κύριε, εἰ σὺ εἶ, κέλευσόν με πρός σε ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα.
And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus. At ipse ait: Veni.
But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἰσχυρὸν ἐφοβήθη, καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξε λέγων· Κύριε, σῶσόν με.
And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?Et continuo Iesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicae fidei, quare dubitasti?εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· ὀλιγόπιστε! εἰς τί ἐδίστασας;
And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus.καὶ ἐμβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος·
And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei es.οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ ἐλθόντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες· ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ υἱὸς εἶ.
And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar.Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον εἰς τὴν γῆν Γεννησαρέτ.
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes:καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην, καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας,
And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eius tangerent.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
