Matthew 12: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Greek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
At that time Jesus went through the corn on the sabbath: and his disciples being hungry, began to pluck the ears, and to eat.In illo tempore abiit Iesus per sata sabbato: discipuli autem eius esurientes coeperunt vellere spicas, et manducare.Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπορεύθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς σάββασι διὰ τῶν σπορίμων· οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπείνασαν, καὶ ἤρξαντο τίλλειν στάχυας καὶ ἐσθίειν.
And the Pharisees seeing them, said to him: Behold thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days.
But he said to them: Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and they that were with him:At ille dixit eis: Non legistis quid fecerit David, quando esuriit, et qui cum eo erant:ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησε Δαυῒδ ὅτε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ;
How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for them that were with him, but for the priests only?quomodo intravit in domum Dei, et panes propositionis comedit, quos non licebat ei edere, neque his qui cum eo erant, nisi solis sacerdotibus?πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν, οὓς οὐκ ἐξὸν ἦν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν οὐδὲ τοῖς μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ, εἰ μὴ μόνοις τοῖς ἱερεῦσι;
Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are without blame?aut non legistis in lege quia sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum violant, et sine crimine sunt?ἢ οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσι, καὶ ἀναίτιοί εἰσι;
But I tell you that there is here a greater than the temple.
And if you knew what this meaneth: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: you would never have condemned the innocent.
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath.dominus enim est Filius hominis etiam sabbati.κύριος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ τοῦ σαββάτου.
And when he has passed from thence, he came into their synagogues.Et cum inde transisset, venit in synagogam eorum.Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν αὐτῶν.
And behold there was a man who had a withered hand, and they asked him, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
But he said to them: What man shall there be among you, that hath one sheep: and if the same fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not take hold on it and lift it up?Ipse autem dixit illis: Quis erit ex vobis homo, qui habeat ovem unam, et si ceciderit haec sabbatis in foveam, nonne tenebit et levabit eam?ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τίς ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἕξει πρόβατον ἕν, καὶ ἐὰν ἐμπέσῃ τοῦτο τοῖς σάββασιν εἰς βόθυνον, οὐχὶ κρατήσει αὐτὸ καὶ ἐγερεῖ;
How much better is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do a good deed on the sabbath days.
Then he saith to the man: Stretch forth thy hand; and he stretched it forth, and it was restored to health even as the other.Tunc ait homini: Extende manum tuam.
And the Pharisees going out made a consultation against him, how they might destroy him.
But Jesus knowing it, retired from thence: and many followed him, and he healed them all.
And he charged them that they should not make him known.et praecepit eis ne manifestum eum facerent.καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μὴ φανερὸν ποιήσωσιν αὐτόν,
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaias the prophet, saying:Ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam, dicentem:ὅπως πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἡσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος·
Behold my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul hath been well pleased. I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.Ecce puer meus, quem elegi, dilectus meus, in quo bene complacuit animae meae.
He shall not contend, nor cry out, neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.Non contendet, neque clamabit, neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem eius:οὐκ ἐρίσει οὐδὲ κραυγάσει, οὐδὲ ἀκούσει τις ἐν ταῖς πλατείαις τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ.
The bruised reed he shall not break: and smoking flax he shall not extinguish: till he send forth judgment unto victory.arundinem quassatam non confringet, et linum fumigans non extinguet, donec eiiciat ad victoriam iudicium:κάλαμον συντετριμμένον οὐ κατεάξει καὶ λίνον τυφόμενον οὐ σβέσει, ἕως ἂν ἐκβάλῃ εἰς νῖκος τὴν κρίσιν·
And in his name the Gentiles shall hope.et in nomine eius gentes sperabunt.καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ ἔθνη ἐλπιοῦσι.
Then was offered to him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb: and he healed him, so that he spoke and saw.
And all the multitudes were amazed, and said: Is not this the son of David?Et stupebant omnes turbae, et dicebant: Numquid hic est filius David?καὶ ἐξίσταντο πάντες οἱ ὄχλοι καὶ ἔλεγον· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς Δαυΐδ;
But the Pharisees hearing it, said: This man casteth not out the devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.Pharisaei autem audientes, dixerunt: Hic non eiicit daemones nisi in Beelzebub principe daemoniorum.οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες εἶπον· οὗτος οὐκ ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια εἰμὴ ἐν [τῷ] Βεελζεβούλ, ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων.
And Jesus knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be made desolate: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.
And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself: how then shall his kingdom stand?Et si Satanas Satanam eiicit, adversus se divisus est: quomodo ergo stabit regnum eius?καὶ εἰ ὁ σατανᾶς τὸν σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλει, ἐφ᾽ ἑαυτὸν ἐμερίσθη· πῶς οὖν σταθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ;
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.Et si ego in Beelzebub eiicio daemones, filii vestri in quo eiiciunt? ideo ipsi iudices vestri erunt.καὶ εἰ ἐγὼ ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια, οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν ἐν τίνι ἐκβαλοῦσι; διὰ τοῦτο αὐτοὶ κριταὶ ἔσονται ὑμῶν.
But if I by the Spirit of God cast out devils, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.Si autem ego in Spiritu Dei eiicio daemones, igitur pervenit in vos regnum Dei.εἰ δὲ ἐγὼ ἐν Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια, ἄρα ἔφθασεν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ.
Or how can any one enter into the house of the strong, and rifle his goods, unless he first bind the strong? and then he will rifle his house.Aut quomodo potest quisquam intrare in domum fortis, et vasa eius diripere, nisi prius alligaverit fortem? et tunc domum illius diripiet.ἢ πῶς δύναταί τις εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ἁρπάσαι, ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον δήσῃ τὸν ἰσχυρόν; καὶ τότε τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ διαρπάσει.
He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.Qui non est mecum, contra me est; et qui non congregat mihi, spargit.ὁ μὴ ὢν μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ κατ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἐστι, καὶ ὁ μὴ συνάγων μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ σκορπίζει.
Therefore I say to you: Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come.Et quicumque dixerit verbum contra Filium hominis, remittetur ei: qui autem dixerit contra Spiritum Sanctum, non remittetur ei, neque in hoc saeculo, neque in futuro.καὶ ὃς ἐὰν εἴπῃ λόγον κατὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ· ὃς δ᾽ ἂν εἴπῃ κατὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Ἁγίου, οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ οὔτε ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι οὔτε ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι.
Either make the tree good and its fruit good: or make the tree evil, and its fruit evil. For by the fruit the tree is known.
O generation of vipers, how can you speak good things, whereas you are evil? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
A good man out of a good treasure bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall render an account for it in the day of judgment.Dico autem vobis quoniam omne verbum otiosum, quod locuti fuerint homines, reddent rationem de eo in die iudicii.λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶν ῥῆμα ἀργὸν ὃ ἐὰν λαλήσωσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ἀποδώσουσι περὶ αὐτοῦ λόγον ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως·
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.Ex verbis enim tuis iustificaberis et ex verbis tuis condemnaberis.ἐκ γὰρ τῶν λόγων σου δικαιωθήσῃ καὶ ἐκ τῶν λόγων σου καταδικασθήσῃ.
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying: Master we would see a sign from thee.Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisaeis, dicentes: Magister, volumus a te signum videre.Τότε ἀπεκρίθησάν τινες τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων λέγοντες· διδάσκαλε, θέλομεν ἀπὸ σοῦ σημεῖον ἰδεῖν.
Who answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
For as Jonas was in the whale’s belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.Sicut enim fuit Ionas in ventre ceti tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terrae tribus diebus et tribus noctibus.ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐγένετο Ἰωνᾶς ὁ προφήτης ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ τοῦ κήτους τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας, οὕτως ἔσται [καὶ] ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ τῆς γῆς τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας.
The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold a greater than Jonas here.Viri Ninivitae surgent in iudicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabunt eam: quia poenitentiam egerunt in praedicatione Ionae, et ecce plus quam Ionas hic.ἄνδρες Νινευῖται ἀναστήσονται ἐν τῇ κρίσει μετὰ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτήν, ὅτι μετενόησαν εἰς τὸ κήρυγμα Ἰωνᾶ, καὶ ἰδοὺ πλεῖον Ἰωνᾶ ὧδε.
The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than Solomon here.Regina austri surget in iudicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabit eam: quia venit a finibus terrae audire sapientiam Salomonis, et ecce plus quam Salomon hic.βασίλισσα νότου ἐγερθήσεται ἐν τῇ κρίσει μετὰ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ κατακρινεῖ αὐτήν, ὅτι ἦλθεν ἐκ τῶν περάτων τῆς γῆς ἀκοῦσαι τὴν σοφίαν Σολομῶνος, καὶ ἰδοὺ πλεῖον Σολομῶνος ὧδε.
And when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places seeking rest, and findeth none.
Then he saith: I will return into my house from whence I came out. And coming he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.Tunc dicit: Revertar in domum meam, unde exivi.
Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is made worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation.
As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him.
And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee.
But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?At ipse respondens dicenti sibi, ait: Quae est mater mea, et qui sunt fratres mei?ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ λέγοντι αὐτῷ· τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ἀδελφοί μου;
And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren.Et extendens manum in discipulos suos, dixit: Ecce mater mea, et fratres mei.καὶ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔφη· ἰδοὺ ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου·
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.Quicumque enim fecerit voluntatem Patris mei, qui in caelis est, ipse meus frater, et soror, et mater est.ὅστις γὰρ ἂν ποιήσῃ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς, αὐτός μου ἀδελφὸς καὶ ἀδελφὴ καὶ μήτηρ ἐστίν.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
