Judges 4: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord after the death of Aod,Καὶ προσέθεντο οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ποιῆσαι τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου· καὶ Ἀὼδ ἀπέθανε.
And the Lord delivered them up into the hands of Jaban king of Chanaan, who reigned in Asor: and he had a general of his army named Sisara, and he dwelt in Haroseth of the Gentiles.Καὶ ἀπέδοτο τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ Κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Ἰαβὶν βασιλέως Χαναὰν, ὃς ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἀσώρ· καὶ ὁ ἂρχων τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ Σισάρα, καὶ αὐτὸς κατῴκει ἐν Ἀρισὼθ τῶν ἐθνῶν.
And the children of Israel cried to the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots set with scythes, and for twenty years had grievously oppressed them.Καὶ ἐκέκραξαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Κύριον, ὅτι ἐννακόσια ἅρματα σιδηρᾶ ἦν αὐτῷ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἔθλιψε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατακράτος εἴκοσι ἔτη.
And there was at that time Debbora a prophetess the wife of Lapidoth, who judged the people,Καὶ Δεββῶρα γυνὴ προφῆτις, γυνὴ Λαφιδὼθ, αὕτη ἔκρινε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ.
And she sat under a palm tree, which was called by her name, between Rama and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for all judgment.Καὶ αὐτὴ ἐκάθητο ὑπὸ φοίνικα Δεββῶρα ἀναμέσον τῆς Ῥαμὰ καὶ ἀναμέσον τῆς Βαιθὴλ ἐν τῷ ὄρει Ἐφραίμ· καὶ ἀνέβαινον πρὸς αὐτὴν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ εἰς κρίσιν.
And she sent and called Barac the son of Abinoem out of Cedes in Nephtali: and she said to him: The Lord God of Israel hath commanded thee: Go, and lead an army to mount Thabor, and thou shalt take with thee ten thousand fighting men of the children of Nephtali, and of the children of Zabulon:Καὶ ἀπέστειλε Δεββῶρα καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸν Βαρὰκ υἱὸν Ἀβινεὲμ ἐκ Κάδης Νεφθαλὶ, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὸν, οὐχὶ ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραήλ σοι; καὶ ἀπελεύσῃ εἰς ὄρος Θαβὼρ, καὶ λήψῃ μετὰ σεαυτοῦ δέκα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Νεφθαλὶ, καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ζαβουλὼν.
And I will bring unto thee in the place of the torrent Cison, Sisara the general of Jabin’s army, and his chariots, and all his multitude, and will deliver them into thy hand.Καὶ ἐπάξω πρὸς σὲ εἰς τὸν χειμάῤῥουν Κισῶν ἐπὶ τὸν Σισάρα ἄρχοντα τῆς δυνάμεως Ἰαβὶν, καὶ τὰ ἅρματα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραδώσω αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖράς σου.
And Barac said to her: If thou wilt come with me, I will go: if thou wilt not come with me, I will not go.Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὴν Βαρὰκ, ἐὰν πορευθῇς μετʼ ἐμοῦ, πορεύσομαι, καὶ ἐὰν μὴ πορευθῇς, οὐ πορεύσομαι· ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα τὴν ἡμέραν ἐν ᾗ εὐοδοῖ Κύριος τὸν ἄγγελον μετʼ ἐμοῦ.
She said to him: I will go indeed with thee, but at this time the victory shall not be attributed to thee, because Sisara shall be delivered into the hand of a woman. Debbora therefore arose, and went with Barac to Cedes.Καὶ εἶπε, πορευομένη πορεύσομαι μετὰ σοῦ· πλὴν γίνωσκε ὅτι οὐκ ἔσται τὸ προτέρημά σου ἐπὶ τὴν ὁδὸν ἣν σὺ πορεύῃ, ὅτι ἐν χειρὶ γυναικὸς ἀποδώσεται Κύριος τὸν Σισάρα· καὶ ἀνέστη Δεββῶρα, καὶ ἐπορεύθη μετὰ τοῦ Βαρὰκ ἐκ Κάδης.
And he called unto him Zabulon and Nepbtali, and went up with ten thousand fighting men, having Debbora in his company.Καὶ ἐβόησε Βαρὰκ τὸν Ζαβουλὼν καὶ τὸν Νεφθαλὶ ἐκ Κάδης, καὶ ἀνέβησαν κατὰ πόδας αὐτοῦ δέκα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν, καὶ ἀνέβη Δεββῶρα μετʼ αὐτοῦ.
Now Haber the Cinite had some time before departed from the rest of the Cinites his brethren the sons of Hobab, the kinsman of Moses: and had pitched his tents unto the valley which is called Sellnim, and was near Cedes.Καὶ Χαβὲρ ὁ Κιναῖος ἐχωρίσθη ἀπὸ Καινᾶ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰωβὰβ γαμβροῦ Μωυσῆ· καὶ ἔπηξε τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ἕως δρυὸς πλεονεκτούντων, ἥ ἐστιν ἐχόμενα Κεδές.
And it was told Sisara, that Barac the son of Ablinoem was gone up to mount Thabor:Καὶ ἀνηγγέλη Σισάρᾳ, ὅτι ἀνέβη Βαρὰκ υἱὸς Ἀβινεὲμ εἰς ὄρος Θαβώρ.
And he gathered together his nine hundred chariots armed with scythes, and all his army from Haroseth of the Gentiles to the torrent Cison.Καὶ ἐκάλεσε Σισάρα πάντα τὰ ἅρματα αὐτοὺ ἐννακόσια ἅρματα σιδηρᾶ, καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν τὸν μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ Ἀρισὼθ τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰς τὸν χειμάῤῥουν Κισῶν.
And Debbora said to Barac: Arise, for this is the day wherein the Lord hath delivered Sisara into thy hands: behold he is thy leader. And Barac went down from mount Thabor, and ten thousand fighting men with him.Καὶ εἶπε Δεββῶρα πρὸς Βαρὰκ, ἀνάστηθι, ὅτι αὕτη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐν ᾗ παρέδωκε Κύριος τὸν Σισάρα ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ὅτι Κύριος ἐξελεύσεται ἔμπροσθέν σου· καὶ κατέβη Βαρὰκ κατὰ τοῦ ὄρους Θαβὼρ, καὶ δέκα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.
And the Lord struck a terror into Sisara, and all his chariots, and all his multitude, with the edge of the sword, at the sight of Barac, insomuch that Sisara leaping down from off his chariot, fled away on foot.Καὶ ἐξέστησε Κύριος τὸν Σισάρα καὶ πάντα τὰ ἅρματα αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν παρεμβολὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν στόματι ῥομφαίας ἐνώπιον Βαράκ· καὶ κατέβη Σισάρα ἐπάνωθεν τοὺ ἄρματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔφυγε τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτοῦ.
And Barac pursued after the fleeing chariots and the army unto Haroseth of the Gentiles, and all the multitude of the enemies was utterly destroyed.Καὶ Βαρὰκ διώκων ὀπίσω τῶν ἁρμάτων καὶ ὀπίσω τῆς παρεμβολῆς ἕως Ἀρισὼθ τῶν ἐθνῶν· καὶ ἔπεσε πᾶσα παρεμβολὴ Σισάρα ἐν στόματι ῥομφαίας· οὐ κατελείφθη ἕως ἑνός.
But Sisara fleeing came to the tent of Jahel the wife of Haber the Cinite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Asor, and the house of Haber the Cinite.Καὶ Σισάρα ἔφυγε τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτοῦ εἰς σκηνὴν Ἰαὴλ γυναικὸς Χαβὲρ ἑταίρου τοῦ Κιναίου· ὅτι εἰρήνη ἦν ἀναμέσον Ἰαβὶν βασιλέως Ἀσὼρ καὶ ἀναμέσον τοῦ οἴκου Χαβὲρ τοῦ Κιναίου.
And Jahel went forth to meet Sisara, and said to him: Come in to me, my lord, come in, fear not. He went in to her tent, and being covered by her with a cloak,Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰαὴλ εἰς συνάντησιν Σισάρα, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἔκκλινον, κύριέ μου, ἔκκλινον πρὸς μὲ, μὴ φοβοῦ· καὶ ἐξέκλινε πρὸς αὐτῆν εἰς τὴν σκηνήν· καὶ περιέβαλεν αὐτὸν ἐπιβολαίῳ.
Said to her: Give me, I beseech thee, a little water, for I am very thirsty. She opened a bottle of milk, and gave him to drink, and covered him.Καὶ εἶπε Σισάρα πρὸς αὐτὴν, πότισόν με δὴ μικρὸν ὑδωρ, ὅτι ἐδίψησα· καὶ ἤνοιξε τὸν ἀσκὸν τοῦ γάλακτος, καὶ ἐπότισεν αὐτὸν, καὶ περιέβαλεν αὐτόν.
And Sisara said to her: Stand before the door of the tent, and when any shall come and inquire of thee, saying: Is there any man here? thou shalt say: There is none.Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὴν Σισάρα, στῆθι δὴ ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς, καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν ἀνὴρ ἔλθῃ πρὸς σὲ, καὶ ἐρωτήσῃ σε, καὶ εἴπῃ, εἰ ἔστιν ὧδε ἀνήρ; καὶ ἐρεῖς, οὐκ ἔστι.
So Jahel Haber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and taking also a hammer: and going in softly, and with silence, she put the nail upon the temples of his head, and striking it With the hammer, drove it through his brain fast into the ground: and so passing from deep sleep to death, he fainted away and died.Καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰαὴλ γυνὴ Χαβὲρ τὸν πάσσαλον τῆς σκηνῆς, καὶ ἔθηκε τὴν σφύραν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῆς, καὶ εἰσῆλθε πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν κρύφῇ, καὶ ἔπηξε τὸν πάσσαλον ἐν τῷ κροτάφῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ διεξῆλθεν ἐν τῇ γῇ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξεστῶς ἐσκοτώθη, καὶ ἀπέθανε.
And behold Barac came pursuing after Sisara: and Jahel went out to meet him, and said to him: Come, and I will shew thee, the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, be saw Sisara lying dead, and the nail fastened in his temples.Καὶ ἰδοὺ Βαρὰκ διώκων τὸν Σισάρα· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰαὴλ εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, δεῦρο καὶ δείξω σοι τὸν ἄνδρα ὃν σὺ ζητεῖς· καὶ εἰσῆλθε πρὸς αὐτήν· καὶ ἰδοὺ Σισάρα ἐῤῥιμμένος νεκρὸς, καὶ ὁ πάσσαλος ἐν τῷ κροτάφῳ αὐτοῦ.
So God that day humbled Jabin the king of Chanaan before the children of Israel:Καὶ ἐτρόπωσεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν Ἰαβὶν βασιλέα Χαναὰν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἔμπροσθεν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
Who grew daily stronger, and with a mighty hand overpowered Jabin king of Chanaan, till they quite destroyed him.Καὶ ἐπορεύετο χεὶρ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ πορευομένη καὶ σκληρυνομένη ἐπὶ Ἰαβὶν βασιλέα Χαναὰν, ἕως οὗ ἐξωλόθρευσαν τὸν Ἰαβὶν βασιλέα Χαναάν.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
