Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
And at that time there was raised a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all dispersed through the countries of Judea, and Samaria, except the apostles.Facta est autem in illa die persecutio magna in ecclesia quae erat Ierosolymis, et omnes dispersi sunt per regiones Iudaeae et Samariae praeter Apostolos.Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ διωγμὸς μέγας ἐπὶ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τὴν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις· πάντες δὲ διεσπάρησαν κατὰ τὰς χώρας τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ Σαμαρείας, πλὴν τῶν ἀποστόλων.
And devout men took order for Stephen’s funeral, and made great mourning over him.
But Saul made havock of the church, entering in from house to house, and dragging away men and women, committed them to prison.Saulus autem devastabat ecclesiam per domos intrans, et trahens viros ac mulieres, tradebat in custodiam.Σαῦλος δὲ ἐλυμαίνετο τὴν ἐκκλησίαν κατὰ τοὺς οἴκους εἰσπορευόμενος, σύρων τε ἄνδρας καὶ γυναῖκας παρεδίδου εἰς φυλακήν.
They therefore that were dispersed, went about preaching the word of God.Igitur qui dispersi erant pertransibant, evangelizantes verbum Dei.Οἱ μὲν οὖν διασπαρέντες διῆλθον εὐαγγελιζόμενοι τὸν λόγον.
And Philip going down to the city of Samaria, preached Christ unto them.Philippus autem descendens in civitatem Samariae, praedicabant illis Christum.Φίλιππος δὲ κατελθὼν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας ἐκήρυσσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Χριστόν.
And the people with one accord were attentive to those things which were said by Philip, hearing, and seeing the miracles which he did.Intendebant autem turbae his quae a Philippo dicebantur, unanimiter audientes, et videntes signa quae faciebat.προσεῖχον δὲ οἱ ὄχλοι τοῖς λεγομένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ Φιλίππου ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἐν τῷ ἀκούειν αὐτοὺς καὶ βλέπειν τὰ σημεῖα ἃ ἐποίει.
For many of them who had unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out.
And many, taken with the palsy, and that were lame, were healed.Factum est ergo gaudium magnum in illa civitate.καὶ ἐγένετο χαρὰ μεγάλη ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ.
There was therefore great joy in that city. Now there was a certain man named Simon, who before had been a magician in that city, seducing the people of Samaria, giving out that he was some great one:Vir autem quidam nomine Simon, qui ante fuerat in civitate magus, seducens gentem Samariae, dicens se esse aliquem magnum:Ἀνὴρ δέ τις ὀνόματι Σίμων προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει μαγεύων καὶ ἐξιστῶν τὸ ἔθνος τῆς Σαμαρείας, λέγων εἶναί τινα ἑαυτὸν μέγαν·
To whom they all gave ear, from the least to the greatest, saying: This man is the power of God, which is called great.cui auscultabant omnes a minimo usque ad maximum, dicentes: Hic est virtus Dei, quae vocatur magna.ᾧ προσεῖχον πάντες ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου λέγοντες· οὗτός ἐστιν ἡ δύναμις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ μεγάλη.
And they were attentive to him, because, for a long time, he had bewitched them with his magical practices.
But when they had believed Philip preaching of the kingdom of God, in the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.Cum vero credidissent Philippo evangelizanti de regno Dei, in nomine Iesu Christi baptizabantur viri ac mulieres.ὅτε δὲ ἐπίστευσαν τῷ Φιλίππῳ εὐαγγελιζομένῳ τὰ περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ὀνόματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐβαπτίζοντο ἄνδρες τε καὶ γυναῖκες.
Then Simon himself believed also; and being baptized, he adhered to Philip. And being astonished, wondered to see the signs and exceeding great miracles which were done.
Now when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John.
Who, when they were come, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost.
For he was not as yet come upon any of them; but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.nondum enim in quemquam illorum venerat, sed baptizati tantum erant in nomine Domini Iesu.οὔπω γὰρ ἦν ἐπ᾽ οὐδενὶ αὐτῶν ἐπιπεπτωκός, μόνον δὲ βεβαπτισμένοι ὑπῆρχον εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.
Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
And when Simon saw, that by the imposition of the hands of the apostles, the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,Cum vidisset autem Simon quia per impositionem manus Apostolorum daretur Spiritus Sanctus, obtulit eis pecuniam,ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Σίμων ὅτι διὰ τῆς ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τῶν ἀποστόλων δίδοται τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον, προσήνεγκεν αὐτοῖς χρήματα
Saying: Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I shall lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said to him:dicens: Date et mihi hanc potestatem, ut cuicumque imposuero manus, accipiat Spiritum Sanctum.
Keep thy money to thyself, to perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.Pecunia tua tecum sit in perditionem: quoniam donum Dei existimasti pecunia possideri.Πέτρος δὲ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν· τὸ ἀργύριόν σου σὺν σοὶ εἴη εἰς ἀπώλειαν, ὅτι τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐνόμισας διὰ χρημάτων κτᾶσθαι.
Thou hast no part nor lot in this matter. For thy heart is not right in the sight of God.Non est tibi pars neque sors in sermone isto: cor enim tuum non est rectum coram Deo.οὐκ ἔστι σοι μερὶς οὐδὲ κλῆρος ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τούτῳ· ἡ γὰρ καρδία σου οὐκ ἔστιν εὐθεῖα ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ.
Do penance therefore for this thy wickedness; and pray to God, that perhaps this thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee.
For I see thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bonds of iniquity.In felle enim amaritudinis, et obligatione iniquitatis, video te esse.εἰς γὰρ χολὴν πικρίας καὶ σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας ὁρῶ σε ὄντα.
Then Simon answering, said: Pray you for me to the Lord, that none of these things which you have spoken may come upon me.Respondens autem Simon, dixit: Precamini vos pro me ad Dominum, ut nihil veniat super me horum quae dixistis.ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Σίμων εἶπε· δεήθητε ὑμεῖς ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ὅπως μηδὲν ἐπέλθῃ ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ ὧν εἰρήκατε.
And they indeed having testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel to many countries of the Samaritans.
Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying: Arise, go towards the south, to the way that goeth down from Jerusalem into Gaza: this is desert.Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Philippum, dicens: Surge, et vade contra meridianum, ad viam quae descendit ab Ierusalem in Gazam: haec est deserta.Ἄγγελος δὲ Κυρίου ἐλάλησε πρὸς Φίλιππον λέγων· ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου κατὰ μεσημβρίαν ἐπὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν καταβαίνουσαν ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς Γάζαν· αὕτη ἐστὶν ἔρημος.
And rising up, he went. And behold a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch, of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge over all her treasures, had come to Jerusalem to adore.
And he was returning, sitting in this chariot, and reading Isaias the prophet.et revertebatur sedens super currum suum, legensque Isaiam prophetam.ἦν τε ὑποστρέφων καὶ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ ἅρματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνεγίνωσκε τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν.
And the Spirit said to Philip: Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
And Philip running thither, heard him reading the prophet Isaias. And he said: Thinkest thou that thou understandest what thou readest?Accurrens autem Philippus, audivit eum legentem Isaiam prophetam, et dixit: Putasne intelligis quae legis?προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν, καὶ εἶπεν· ἆρά γε γινώσκεις ἃ ἀναγινώσκεις;
Who said: And how can I, unless some man shew me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
And the place of the scripture which he was reading was this: He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb without voice before his shearer, so openeth he not his mouth.
In humility his judgment was taken away. His generation who shall declare, for his life shall be taken from the earth?In humilitate iudicium eius sublatum est.
And the eunuch answering Philip, said: I beseech thee, of whom doth the prophet speak this? of himself, or of some other man?Respondens autem eunuchus Philippo, dixit: Obsecro te, de quo propheta dicit hoc? de se, an de alio aliquo?ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ εὐνοῦχος τῷ Φιλίππῳ εἶπε· δέομαί σου, περὶ τίνος ὁ προφήτης λέγει τοῦτο; περὶ ἑαυτοῦ ἢ περὶ ἑτέρου τινός;
Then Philip, opening his mouth, and beginning at this scripture, preached unto him Jesus.Aperiens autem Philippus os suum, et incipiens a Scriptura ista, evangelizavit illi Iesum.ἀνοίξας δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς γραφῆς ταύτης εὐηγγελίσατο αὐτῷ τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
And as they went on their way, they came to a certain water; and the eunuch said: See, here is water: what doth hinder me from being baptized?Et dum irent per viam, venerunt ad quamdam aquam: et ait eunuchus: Ecce aqua: quid prohibet me baptizari?ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἦλθον ἐπί τι ὕδωρ, καί φησιν ὁ εὐνοῦχος· ἰδοὺ ὕδωρ· τί κωλύει με βαπτισθῆναι;
And Philip said: If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answering, said: I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.Dixit autem Philippus: Si credis ex toto corde, licet.
And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch: and he baptized him.Et iussit stare currum: et descenderunt uterque in aquam, Philippus et eunuchus, et baptizavit eum.καὶ ἐκέλευσε στῆναι τὸ ἅρμα, καὶ κατέβησαν ἀμφότεροι εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ, ὅ τε Φίλιππος καὶ ὁ εὐνοῦχος, καὶ ἐβάπτισεν αὐτόν.
And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more. And he went on his way rejoicing.
But Philip was found in Azotus; and passing through, he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.Philippus autem inventus est in Azoto, et pertransiens evangelizabat civitatibus cunctis, donec veniret Caesaream.Φίλιππος δὲ εὑρέθη εἰς Ἄζωτον, καὶ διερχόμενος εὐηγγελίζετο τὰς πόλεις πάσας ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς Καισάρειαν.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
