Timothy 3: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Greek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
A faithful saying: if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.Fidelis sermo: si quis episcopatum desiderat, bonum opus desiderat.Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.
It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste, given to hospitality, a teacher,Oportet ergo episcopum irreprehensibilem esse, unius uxoris virum, sobrium, prudentem, ornatum, pudicum, hospitalem, doctorem,δεῖ οὖν τὸν ἐπίσκοπον ἀνεπίληπτον εἶναι, μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, νηφάλιον, σώφρονα, κόσμιον, φιλόξενον, διδακτικόν,
Not given to wine, no striker, but modest, not quarrelsome, not covetous, butnon vinolentum, non percussorem, sed modestum: non litigiosum, non cupidum, sedμὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, μὴ αἰσχροκερδῆ, ἀλλ᾽ ἐπιεικῆ, ἄμαχον, ἀφιλάργυρον,
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity.suae domui bene praepositum: filios habentem subditos cum omni castitate.τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος· —
But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?Si quis autem domui suae praeesse nescit, quomodo ecclesiae Dei diligentiam habebit?εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδε, πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται; —
Not a neophyte: lest being puffed up with pride, he fall into the judgment of the devil.Non neophytum: ne in superbiam elatus, in iudicium incidat diaboli.μὴ νεόφυτον, ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς εἰς κρῖμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου.
Moreover he must have a good testimony of them who are without: lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.Oportet autem illum et testimonium habere bonum ab iis qui foris sunt, ut non in opprobrium incidat, et in laqueum diaboli.δεῖ δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ μαρτυρίαν καλὴν ἔχειν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐμπέσῃ καὶ παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου.
Deacons in like manner chaste, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre:Diaconos similiter pudicos, non bilingues, non multo vino deditos, non turpe lucrum sectantes:Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς, μὴ διλόγους, μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας, μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς,
Holding the mystery of faith in a pure conscience.habentes mysterium fidei in conscientia pura.ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει.
And let these also first be proved: and so let them minister, having no crime.Et hi autem probentur primum: et sic ministrent, nullum crimen habentes.καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.
The women in like manner chaste, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things.Mulieres similiter pudicas, non detrahentes, sobrias, fideles in omnibus.γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς, μὴ διαβόλους, νηφαλίους, πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσι.
Let deacons be the husbands of one wife: who rule well their children, and their own houses.
For they that have ministered well, shall purchase to themselves a good degree, and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.Qui enim bene ministraverint, gradum bonum sibi acquirent, et multam fiduciam in fide, quae est in Christo Iesu.οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
These things I write to thee, hoping that I shall come to thee shortly.Haec tibi scribo, sperans me ad te venire cito:Ταῦτά σοι γράφω ἐλπίζων ἐλθεῖν πρός σε τάχιον·
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.si autem tardavero, ut scias quomodo oporteat te in domo Dei conversari, quae est ecclesia Dei vivi, columna et firmamentum veritatis.ἐὰν δὲ βραδύνω, ἵνα εἰδῇς πῶς δεῖ ἐν οἴκῳ Θεοῦ ἀναστρέφεσθαι, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία Θεοῦ ζῶντος, στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας.
And evidently great is the mystery of godliness, which was manifested in the flesh, was justified in the spirit, appeared unto angels, hath been preached unto the Gentiles, is believed in the world, is taken up in glory.Et manifeste magnum est pietatis sacramentum, quod manifestatum est in carne, iustificatum est in spiritu, apparuit angelis, praedicatum est gentibus, creditum est in mundo, assumptum est in gloria.καὶ ὁμολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶ τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον· Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί, ἐδικαιώθη ἐν Πνεύματι, ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις, ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν, ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ, ἀνελήφθη ἐν δόξῃ.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets
