Now it came to pass, when Judith a widow had heard these words, who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozias, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Achitob, the son of Melehias, the son of Enan, the son of Nathanias, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben:Et factum est cum audisset haec verba Iudith vidua, quae erat filia Merari filii Idox filii Ioseph filii Oziae filii Elai filii Iamnor filii Gedeon filii Raphaim filii Achitob filii Melchiae filii Enan filii Nathaniae filii Salathiel filii Simeon filii Ruben,Καὶ ἤκουσεν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἰουδὶθ, θυγάτηρ Μεραρὶ, υἱοῦ Ὢξ, υἱοῦ Ἰωσὴφ, υἱοῦ Ὀζιὴλ, υἱοὺ Ἑλκία, υἱοῦ Ἠλιοὺ, υἱοῦ Χελκίου, υἱοῦ Ἐλιὰβ, υἱοῦ Ναθαναὴλ, υἱοῦ Σαλαμιὴλ, υἱοῦ Σαρασαδαΐ, υἱοῦ Ἰσραήλ.
And her husband was Manasses, who died in the time of the barley harvest:et vir eius fuit Manasses, qui mortuus est in diebus messis hordeaceae:Καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς Μανασσῆς, τῆς φυλῆς αὐτῆς, καὶ τῆς πατριᾶς αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐν ἡμέραις θερισμοῦ κριθῶν·
For he was standing over them that bound sheaves in the field; and the heat came upon his head, and he died in Bethulia his own city, and was buried there with his fathers.instabat enim super alligantes manipulos in campo, et venit aestus super caput eius, et mortuus est in Bethulia civitate sua, et sepultus est illic cum patribus suis.ἐπέστη γὰρ ἐπὶ τοῦ δεσμεύοντος τὸ δρᾶγμα ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ, καὶ ὁ καύσων ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην, καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν ἐν Βετυλούᾳ τῇ πόλει αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ τῷ ἀναμέσον Δωθαῒμ καὶ Βελαμών.
And Judith his relict was a widow now three years and six months.
And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she abode shut up with her maids.Et in superioribus domus suae fecit sibi secretum cubiculum, in quo cum puellis suis clausa morabatur,Καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῇ σκηνὴν ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τὴν ὀσφῦν αὐτῆς σάκκον· καὶ ἦν ἐπʼ αὐτῆς τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως αὐτῆς.
And she wore haircloth upon her loins, and fasted all the days of her life, except the sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.et habens super lumbos suos cilicium, ieiunabat omnibus diebus vitae suae, praeter sabbata et neomenias et festa domus Israël.Καὶ ἐνήστευε πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας χηρεύσεως αὐτῆς χωρὶς προσαββάτων, καὶ σαββάτων, καὶ προνουμηνιῶν, καὶ νουμηνιῶν, καὶ ἑορτῶν, καὶ χαρμοσυνῶν οἴκου Ἰσραήλ.
And she was exceedingly beautiful, and her husband left her great riches, and very many servants, and large possessions of herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep.
And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, neither was there any one that spoke an ill word of her.Et erat haec in omnibus famosissima, quoniam timebat Dominum valde, nec erat qui loqueretur de illa verbum malum.Καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὃς ἐπήνεγκεν αὐτῇ ῥῆμα πονηρὸν, ὅτι ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Θεὸν σφόδρα.
When therefore she had heard that Ozias had promised that he would deliver up the city after the fifth day, she sent to the ancients Chabri and Charmi.
And they came to her, and she said to them: What is this word, by which Ozias hath consented to give up the city to the Assyrians, if within five days there come no aid to us?Et venerunt ad illam, et dixit illis: Quod est hoc verbum, in quo consensit Ozias, ut tradat civitatem Assyriis si intra quinque dies non venerit vobis adiutorium?Καὶ ἀποστείλασα τὴν ἅβραν αὐτῆς τὴν ἐφεστῶσαν πᾶσι τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτῆς, ἐκάλεσεν Ὀζίαν καὶ Χαβρὶν καὶ Χαρμὶν τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους τῆς πόλεως αὐτῆς.
And who are you that tempt the Lord?et qui estis vos, qui tentatis Dominum?Καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὴν, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς, ἀκούσατε δή μου ἄρχοντες τῶν κατοικούντων ἐν Βετυλούᾳ· ὅτι οὐκ εὐθὴς ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν ὃν ἐλαλήσατε ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ, καὶ ἐστήσατε τὸν ὅρκον ὃν ἐλαλήσατε ἀναμέσον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν, καὶ εἴπατε ἐκδώσειν τὴν πόλιν τοῖς ἐχθροῖς ὑμῶν, ἐὰν μὴ ἐν αὐταῖς ἐπιστρέψῃ ὁ Κύριος βοηθῆσαι ἡμῖν.
This is not a word that may draw down mercy, but rather that may stir up wrath, and enkindle indignation.non est iste sermo qui misericordiam provocet, sed potius qui iram excitet, et furorem accendat.Καὶ νῦν τίνες ἐστὲ ὑμεῖς οἳ ἐπειράσατε τὸν Θεὸν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ σήμερον, καὶ ἵστασθε ὑπὲρ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν ἀνθρώπων;
You have set a time for the mercy of the Lord, and you have appointed him a day, according to your pleasure.Posuistis vos tempus miserationis Domini, et in arbitrium vestrum, diem constituistis ei.Καὶ νῦν Κύριον παντοκράτορα ἐξετάζετε, καὶ οὐθὲν ἐπιγνώσεσθε ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος·
But forasmuch as the Lord is patient, let us be penitent for this same thing, and with many tears let us beg his pardon:Sed quia patiens Dominus est, in hoc ipso poeniteamus, et indulgentiam eius fusis lacrimis postulemus:ὅτι βάθος καρδίας ἀνθρώπου οὐχ εὑρήσετε, καὶ λόγους τῆς διανοίας αὐτοῦ οὐ λήψεσθε, καὶ πῶς τὸν Θεὸν ὃς ἐποίησε τὰ πάντα ταῦτα, ἐρευνήσετε, καὶ τὸν νοῦν αὐτοῦ ἐπιγνώσεσθε, καὶ τὸν λογισμὸν αὐτοῦ κατανοήσετε; μηδαμῶς, ἀδελφοὶ, μὴ παροργίζετε Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν ἡμῶν,
For God will not threaten like man, nor be inflamed to anger like the son of man.non enim quasi homo sic Deus comminabitur, neque sicut filius hominis ad iracundiam inflammabitur.ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ βούληται ἐν ταῖς πέντε ἡμέραις βοηθῆσαι ἡμῖν, αὐτὸς ἔχει τὴν ἐξουσίαν ἐν αἷς θέλει σκεπάσαι ἡμέραις, ἢ καὶ ὀλοθρεῦσαι ἡμᾶς πρὸ προσώπου τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν.
And therefore let us humble our souls before him, and continuing in an humble spirit, in his service:Et ideo humiliemus illi animas nostras, et in spiritu constituti humiliato, servientes illiὙμεῖς δὲ μὴ ἐνεχυράζετε τὰς βουλὰς Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν, ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἄνθρωπος ὁ Θεὸς ἀπειληθῆναι, οὐδὲ ὡς υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου διαιτηθῆναι.
Let us ask the Lord with tears, that according to his will so he would shew his mercy to us: that as our heart is troubled by their pride, so also we may glorify in our humility.dicamus flentes Domino, ut secundum voluntatem suam sic faciat nobiscum misericordiam suam: ut sicut conturbatum est cor nostrum in superbia eorum, ita etiam de nostra humilitate gloriemur:Διόπερ ἀναμένοντες τὴν παρʼ αὐτοῦ σωτηρίαν, ἐπικαλεσώμεθα αὐτὸν εἰς βοήθειαν ἡμῶν, καὶ εἰσακούσεται τῆς φωνῆς ἡμῶν, ἐὰν ᾖ αὐτῷ ἀρεστόν.
For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who forsook their God, and worshipped strange gods.quoniam non sumus secuti peccata patrum nostrorum, qui dereliquerunt Deum suum, et adoraverunt deos alienos,Ὅτι οὐκ ἀνέστη ἐν ταῖς γενεαῖς ἡμῶν, οὐδε ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ σήμερον οὔτε φυλὴ, οὔτε πατριὰ, οὔτε δῆμος, οὔτε πόλις ἐξ ἡμῶν, οἳ προσκυνοῦσι θεοῖς χειροποιήτοις, καθάπερ ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς πρότερον ἡμέραις,
For which crime they were given up to their enemies, to the sword, and to pillage, and to confusion: but we know no other God but him.pro quo scelere dati sunt in gladium, et in rapinam, et in confusionem inimicis suis: nos autem alterum deum nescimus praeter ipsum.ὧν χάριν ἐδόθησαν εἰς ῥομφαίαν καὶ εἰς διαρπαγὴν οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν, καὶ ἔπεσον πτῶμα μέγα ἐνώπιον τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν.
Let us humbly wait for his consolation, and the Lord our God will require our blood of the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that shall rise up against us, and bring them to disgrace.
And now, brethren, as you are the ancients among the people of God, and their very soul resteth upon you: comfort their hearts by your speech, that they may be mindful how our fathers were tempted that they might be proved, whether they worshipped their God truly.Et nunc fratres, quoniam vos estis presbyteri in populo Dei, et ex vobis pendet anima illorum, ad eloquium vestrum corda eorum erigite, ut memores sint quia tentati sunt patres nostri, ut probarentur si vere colerent Deum suum.Ὅτι ἐν τῷ ληφθῆναι ἡμᾶς, οὕτως καθήσεται πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία, καὶ προνομευθήσεται τὰ ἅγια ἡμῶν, καὶ ζητήσει τὴν βεβήλωσιν αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἡμῶν,
They must remember how our father Abraham was tempted, and being proved by many tribulations, was made the friend of God.Memores esse debent quomodo pater noster Abraham tentatus est, et per multas tribulationes probatus, Dei amicus effectus est.καὶ τὸν φόνον τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν τῆς γῆς, καὶ τὴν ἐρήμωσιν τῆς κληρονομίας ἡμῶν ἐπιστρέψει εἰς κεφαλὴν ἡμῶν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, οὗ ἐὰν δουλεύσωμεν ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἐσόμεθα εἰς πρόσκομμα καὶ εἰς ὄνειδος ἐναντίον τῶν κτωμένων ἡμᾶς·
So Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.
But they that did not receive the trials with the fear of the Lord, but uttered their impatience and the reproach of their murmuring against the Lord,Illi autem qui tentationes non susceperunt cum timore Domini, et impatientiam suam et improperium murmurationis suae contra Dominum protulerunt,Καὶ νῦν ἀδελφοὶ ἐπιδειξώμεθα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐξ ἡμῶν κρέμαται ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ ἅγια καὶ ὁ οἶκος καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἐπεστήρικται ἐφʼ ἡμῖν.
Were destroyed by the destroyer, and perished by serpents.exterminati sunt ab exterminatore, et a serpentibus perierunt.Παρὰ ταῦτα πάντα εὐχαριστήσωμεν Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν, ὃς πειράζει ἡμᾶς καθὰ καὶ τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν.
As for us therefore let us not revenge ourselves for these things which we suffer.
But esteeming these very punishments to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that these scourges of the Lord, with which like servants we are chastised, have happened for our amendment, and not for our destruction.sed reputantes peccatis nostris haec ipsa supplicia minora esse flagella Domini, quibus quasi servi corripimur ad emendationem, et non ad perditionem nostram evenisse credamus.ὅτι οὐ καθὼς ἐκείνους ἐπύρωσεν εἰς ἐτασμὸν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡμᾶς οὐκ ἐξεδίκησεν, ἀλλʼ εἰς νουθέτησιν μαστιγοῖ Κύριος τοὺς ἐγγίζοντας αὐτῷ.
And Ozias and the ancients said to her: All things which thou hast spoken are true, and there is nothing to be reprehended in thy words.Et dixerunt illi Ozias et presbyteri: Omnia quae locuta es, vera sunt, et non est in sermonibus tuis ulla reprehensio.Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὴν Ὀζίας, πάντα ὅσα εἶπας, ἀγαθῇ καρδίᾳ ἐλάλησας, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὃς ἀντιστήσεται τοῖς λόγοις σου.
Now therefore pray for us, for thou art a holy woman, and one fearing God.Nunc ergo ora pro nobis, quoniam mulier sancta es, et timens Deum.Ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῇ σήμερον ἡ σοφία σου πρόδηλός ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς ἡμερῶν σου ἔγνω πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τὴν σύνεσίν σου, καθότι ἀγαθόν ἐστι τὸ πλάσμα τῆς καρδίας σου.
And Judith said to them: As you know that what I have been able to say is of God:Et dixit illis Iudith: Sicut quod potui loqui, Dei esse cognoscitis,Ἀλλʼ ὁ λαὸς ἐδίψησε σφόδρα, καὶ ἠνάγκασαν ποιῆσαι ἡμᾶς καθὰ ἐλαλήσαμεν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἀπαγαγεῖν ὅρκον ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, ὃν οὐ παραβησόμεθα.
So that which I intend to do prove ye if it be of God, and pray that God may strengthen my design.ita quod facere disposui, probate si ex Deo est, et orate ut firmum faciat Deus consilium meum.Καὶ νῦν δεήθητι περὶ ἡμῶν, ὅτι γυνὴ εὐσεβὴς εἶ, καὶ ἀποστελεῖ Κύριος τὸν ὑετὸν εἰς πλήρωσιν τῶν λάκκων ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐκλείψομεν ἔτι.
You shall stand at the gate this night, and I will go out with my maidservant: and pray ye, that as you have said, in five days the Lord may look down upon his people Israel.Stabitis vos ad portam nocte ista, et ego exeam cum abra mea: et orate, ut sicut dixistis, in diebus quinque respiciat Dominus populum suum Israël.Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἰουδὶθ, ἀκούσατέ μου, καὶ ποιήσω πρᾶγμα ὃ ἀφίξεται εἰς γενεὰς γενεῶν υἱοῖς τοῦ γένους ἡμῶν.
But I desire that you search not into what I am doing, and till I bring you word let nothing else be done but to pray for me to the Lord our God.Vos autem nolo ut scrutemini actum meum, et usque dum renuntiem vobis, nihil aliud fiat, nisi oratio pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.Ὑμεῖς στήσεσθε ἐπὶ τῆς πύλης τὴν νύκτα ταύτην, καὶ ἐξελεύσομαι ἐγὼ μετὰ τῆς ἅβρας μου, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις μεθʼ ἃς εἴπατε παραδώσειν τὴν πόλιν τοῖς ἐχθροῖς ἡμῶν, ἐπισκέψεται Κύριος τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν χειρί μου.
And Ozias the prince of Juda said to her: Go in peace, and the Lord be with thee to take revenge of our enemies. So returning they departed.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
