Baruch 4: Douay-Rheims and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
This is the book of the commandments of God, and the law, that is for ever: all they that keep it, shall come to life: but they that have forsaken it, to death.Αὑτὴ ἡ βίβλος τῶν προσταγμάτων τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ὁ νόμος ὁ ὑπάρχων εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· πάντες οἱ κρατοῦντες αὐτὴν, εἰς ζωήν· οἱ δὲ καταλείποντες αὐτὴν, ἀποθανοῦνται.
Return, O Jacob, and take hold of it, walk in the way by its brightness, in the presence of the light thereof.Ἐπιστρέφου Ἱακὼβ, καὶ ἐπιλαβοῦ αὐτῆς, διόδευσον πρὸς τὴν λάμψιν κατέναντι τοῦ φωτὸς αὐτῆς.
Give not thy honour to another, nor thy dignity to a strange nation.Μὴ δῷς ἑτέρῳ τὴν δόξαν σου, καὶ τὰ συμφέροντά σοι ἔθνει ἀλλοτρίῳ.
We are happy, O Israel: because the things that are pleasing to God, are made known to us.Μακάριοι ἐσμὲν Ἰσραὴλ, ὅτι τὰ ἀρεστὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῖν γνωστά ἐστι.
Be of good comfort, O people of God, the memorial of Israel:Θαρσεῖτε λαός μου, μνημόσυνον Ἰσραήλ.
You have been sold to the Gentiles, not for your destruction: but because you provoked God to wrath, you are delivered to your adversaries.Ἐπράθητε τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὐκ εἰς ἀπώλειαν, διὰ τὸ παροργίσαι ὑμᾶς τὸν Θεόν· παρεδόθητε τοῖς ὑπεναντίοις.
For you have provoked him who made you, the eternal God, offering sacrifice to devils, and not to God.Παρωξύνατε γὰρ τὸν ποιήσαντα ὑμᾶς, θύσαντες δαιμονίοις, καὶ οὐ Θεῷ.
For you have forgotten God, who brought you up, and you have grieved Jerusalem that nursed you.Ἐπελάθεσθε τὸν τροφεύσαντα ὑμᾶς Θεὸν αἰώνιον, ἐλυπήσατε δὲ καὶ τὴν ἐκθρέψασαν ἡμᾶς Ἱερουσαλήμ.
For she saw the wrath of God coming upon you, and she said: Give ear, all you that dwell near Sion, for God hath brought upon me great mourning:Εἶδε γὰρ τὴν ἐπελθοῦσαν ὑμῖν ὀργὴν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν, ἀκούσατε αἱ πάροικοι Σιὼν, ἐπήγαγέ μοι ὁ Θεὸς πένθος μέγα.
For I have seen the captivity of my people, of my sons, and my daughters, which the Eternal hath brought upon them.Εἶδον γὰρ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν τῶν υἱῶν μου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων, ἣν ἐπήγαγεν αὐτοῖς ὁ αἰώνιος.
For I nourished them with joy: but I sent them away with weeping and mourning.Ἔθρεψα γὰρ αὐτοὺς μετʼ εὐφροσύνης, ἐξαπέστειλα δὲ μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ καὶ πένθους.
Let no man rejoice over me, a widow, and desolate: I am forsaken of many for the sins of my children, because they departed from the law of God.Μηδεὶς ἐπιχαιρέτω μοι τῇ χήρᾳ καὶ καταλειφθήσῃ ὑπὸ πολλῶν, ἠρημώθην διὰ τὰς ἁμαρτίας τῶν τέκνων μου, διότι ἐξέκλιναν ἐκ νόμου Θεοῦ,
And they have not known his justices, nor walked by the ways of God’s commandments, neither have they entered by the paths of his truth and justice.καὶ δικαιώματα αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν, οὐδὲ ἐπορεύθησαν ὁδοῖς ἐντολῶν Θεοῦ, οὐδὲ τρίβους παιδείας ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ αὐτοῦ ἐπέβησαν.
Let them that dwell about Sion come, and remember the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Eternal hath brought upon them.Ἐλθέτωσαν αἱ πάροικοι Σιὼν, καὶ μνήσθητε τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν τῶν υἱῶν μου καὶ θυγατέρων, ἣν ἐπήγαγεν αὐτοῖς ὁ αἰώνιος.
For he hath brought a nation upon them from afar, a wicked nation, and of a strange tongue:Ἐπήγαγε γὰρ ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἔθνος μακρόθεν, ἔθνος ἀναιδὲς καὶ ἀλλόγλωσσον· ὅτι οὐκ ᾐσχύνθησαν πρεσβύτην, οὐδὲ παιδίον ἠλέησαν,
Who have neither reverenced the ancient, nor pitied children, and have carried away the beloved of the widow, and have left me all alone without children.καὶ ἀπήγαγον τοὺς ἀγαπητοὺς τῆς χήρας, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τὴν μόνην ἠρήμωσαν.
But as for me, what help can I give you?Ἐγὼ δὲ τί δυνατὴ βοηθῆσαι ὑμῖν; Ὁ γὰρ ἐπαγαγὼν τὰ κακὰ, ἐξελεῖται ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν ὑμῶν.
But he that hath brought the evils upon you, he will deliver you out of the hands of your enemies.Βαδίζετε τέκνα, βαδίζετε, ἐγὼ γὰρ κατελείφθην ἔρημος.
Go your way, my children, go your way: for I am left alone.Ἐξεδυσάμην τὴν στολὴν τῆς εἰρήνης,
I have put off the robe of peace, and have put upon me the sackcloth of supplication, and I will cry to the most High in my days.ἐνεδυσάμην δὲ σάκκον τῆς δεήσεώς μου· κεκράξομαι πρὸς τὸν αἰώνιον ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις μου.
Be of good comfort, my children, cry to the Lord, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the princes your enemies.Θαῤῥεῖτε τέκνα, βοήσατε πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ ἐξελεῖται ὑμᾶς ἐκ δυναστείας, ἐκ χειρος ἐχθρῶν.
For my hope is in the Eternal that he will save you: and joy is come upon me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which shall come to you from our everlasting Saviour.Ἐγὼ γὰρ ἤλπισα ἐπὶ τῷ αἰωνίῳ τὴν σωτηρίαν ὑμῶν· καὶ ἦλθέ μοι χαρὰ παρὰ τοῦ ἁγίου ἐπὶ τῇ ἐλεημοσύνῃ, ἣ ἥξει ὑμῖν ἐν τάχει παρὰ τοῦ αἰωνίου σωτῆρος ὑμῶν.
For I sent you forth with mourning and weeping: but the Lord will bring you back to me with joy and gladness for ever.Ἐξέπεμψα γὰρ ὑμᾶς μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ καὶ πένθους, ἀποδώσει δέ μοι ὁ Θεὸς ὑμᾶς μετὰ χαρμοσύνης καὶ εὐφροσύνης εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
For as the neighbours of Sion have now seen your captivity from God: so shall they also shortly see your salvation from God, which shall come upon you with great honour, and everlasting glory.Ὥσπερ γὰρ νῦν ἑωράκασιν αἱ πάροικοι Σιὼν τὴν ὑμετέραν αἰχμαλωσίαν, οὕτως ὄψονται ἐν τάχει τὴν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν σωτηρίαν, ἣ ἐπελεύσεται ὑμῖν μετὰ δόξης μεγάλης καὶ λαμπρότητος τοῦ αἰωνίου.
My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you: for thy enemy hath persecuted thee, but thou shalt quickly see his destruction: and thou shalt get up upon his neck.Τέκνα μακροθυμήσατε τὴν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπελθοῦσαν ὑμῖν ὀργήν, κατεδίωξέ σε ὁ ἐχθρὸς, καὶ ὄψει αὐτοῦ τὴν ἀπώλειαν ἐν τάχει, καὶ ἐπὶ τραχήλους αὐτῶν ἐπιβήσῃ.
My delicate ones have walked rough ways, for they were taken away as a flock made a prey by the enemies.Οἱ τρυφεροί μου ἐπορεύθησαν ὁδοὺς τραχείας, ᾔρθησαν ὡς ποίμνιον ἡρπασμένον ὑπὸ ἐχθρῶν.
Be of good comfort, my children, and cry to the Lord: for you shall be remembered by him that hath led you away.Θαρσήσατε τέκνα καὶ βοήσατε πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, ἔσται γὰρ ὑμῶν ὑπὸ τοῦ ἐπάγοντος μνεία.
For as it was your mind to go astray from God; so when you return again you shall seek him ten times as much.Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐγένετο ἡ διάνοια ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ πλανηθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ, δεκαπλασιάσατε ἐπιστραφέντες ζητῆσαι αὐτόν.
For he that hath brought evils upon you, shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation.Ὁ γὰρ ἐπαγαγὼν ὑμῖν τὰ κακὰ, ἐπάξει ὑμῖν τὴν αἱώνιον εὐφροσύνην μετὰ τῆς σωτηρίας ὑμῶν.
Be of good heart, O Jerusalem: for he exhorteth thee, that named thee.Θάρσει Ἱερουσαλήμ, παρακαλέσει σε ὁ ὀνομάσας σε.
The wicked that have afflicted thee, shall perish: and they that have rejoiced at thy ruin, shall be punished.Δείλαιοι οἱ σὲ κακώσαντες, καὶ ἐπιχαρέντες τῇ σῇ πτώσει·
The cities which thy children have served, shall be punished: and she that received thy sons.Δείλαιαι αἱ πόλεις αἷς ἐδούλευσαν τὰ τέκνα σου, δειλαία ἡ δεξαμένη τοὺς υἱούς σου.
For as she rejoiced at thy ruin, and was glad of thy fall: so shall she be grieved for her own desolation.Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐχάρη ἐπὶ τῇ σῇ πτώσει, καὶ εὐφράνθη ἐπὶ τῷ πτώματί σου, οὕτως λυπηθήσεται ἐπὶ τῇ ἑαυτῆς ἐρημίᾳ.
And the joy of her multitude shall be cut off: and her gladness shall be turned to mourning.Καὶ περιελῶ αὐτῆς τὸ ἀγαλλίαμα τῆς πολυοχλίας καὶ τὸ γαυρίαμα αὐτῆς εἰς πένθος.
For fire shall come upon her from the Eternal, long to endure, and she shall be inhabited by devils for a great time.Πῦρ γὰρ ἐπελεύσεται αὐτῇ παρὰ τοῦ αἰωνίου εἰς ἡμέρας μακρὰς, καὶ κατοικηθήσεται ὑπὸ δαιμονίων τὸν πλείονα χρόνον.
Look about thee, O Jerusalem, towards the east, and behold the joy that cometh to thee from God.Περίβλεψον πρὸς ἀνατολὰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἴδε τὴν εὐφροσύνην τὴν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ σοι ἐρχομένην.
For behold thy children come, whom thou sentest away scattered, they come gathered together from the east even to the west, at the word of the Holy One rejoicing for the honour of God.Ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται οἱ υἱοί σου οὓς ἐξαπέστειλας, ἔρχονται συνηγμένοι ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν ἕως δυσμῶν τῷ ῥήματι τοῦ ἁγίου, χαίροντες τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ δόξῃ.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
