Jeremiah 17: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
The sin of Juda is written with a pen of iron, with the point of a diamond, it is graven upon the table of their heart, upon the horns of their altars.Peccatum Iuda scriptum est stylo ferreo in ungue adamantino, exaratum super latitudinem cordis eorum, et in cornibus ararum eorum.—
When their children shall remember their altars, and their groves, and their green trees upon high mountains,Cum recordati fuerint filii eorum ararum suarum, et lucorum suorum, lignorumque frondentium, in montibus excelsis,—
Sacrificing in the field: I will give thy strength, and all thy treasures to the spoil, and thy high places for sin in all thy borders.sacrificantes in agro: fortitudinem tuam, et omnes thesauros tuos in direptionem dabo; excelsa tua propter peccata in universis finibus tuis.—
And thou shalt be left stripped of thy inheritance, which I gave thee: and I will make thee serve thy enemies in a land which thou knowest not: because thou hast kindled a fire in my wrath, it shall burn for ever.Et relinqueris sola ab haereditate tua, quam dedi tibi, et servire te faciam inimicis tuis in terra quam ignoras: quoniam ignem succendisti in furore meo: usque in aeternum ardebit.—
Thus saith the Lord: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.Haec dicit Dominus: Maledictus homo qui confidit in homine, et ponit carnem brachium suum, et a Domino recedit cor eius.Ἐπικατάρατος ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς τὴν ἐλπίδα ἔχει ἐπʼ ἄνθρωπον, καὶ στηρίσει σάρκα βραχίονος αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ αὐτὸν, καὶ ἀπὸ Κυρίου ἀποστῇ ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ.
For he shall be like tamaric in the desert, and he shall not see when good shall come: but he shall dwell in dryness in the desert in a salt land, and not inhabited.Erit enim quasi myricae in deserto, et non videbit cum venerit bonum: sed habitabit in siccitate in deserto, in terra salsuginis et inhabitabili.Καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἡ ἀγριομυρίκη ἡ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, οὐκ ὄψεται ὅταν ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθὰ, καὶ κατασκηνώσει ἐν ἁλίμοις, καὶ ἐν ἐρήμῳ, ἐν γῇ ἁλμυρᾷ ἥτις οὐ κατοικεῖται.
Blessed be the man that trusteth in the Lord, and the Lord shall be his confidence.Benedictus vir qui confidit in Domino, et erit Dominus fiducia eius.Καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ ἔσται Κύριος ἐλπὶς αὐτοῦ·
And he shall be as a tree that is planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots towards moisture: and it shall not fear when the heat cometh. And the leaf thereof shall be green, and in the time of drought it shall not be solicitous, neither shall it cease at any time to bring forth fruit.Et erit quasi lignum quod transplantatur super aquas, quod ad humorem mittit radices suas, et non timebit cum venerit aestus: et erit folium eius viride, et in tempore siccitatis non erit sollicitum, nec aliquando desinet facere fructum.Καὶ ἔσται ὡς ξύλον εὐθηνοῦν παρʼ ὕδατα, καὶ ἐπὶ ἰκμάδα βαλεῖ ῥίζαν αὐτοῦ· οὐ φοβηθήσεται ὅταν ἔλθῃ καῦμα, καὶ ἔσται ἐπʼ αὐτῷ στελέχη ἀλσώδη, ἐν ἐνιαυτῷ ἀβροχίας οὐ φοβηθήσεται, καὶ οὐ διαλείψει ποιῶν καρπόν.
The heart is perverse above all things, and unsearchable, who can know it?Pravum est cor omnium, et inscrutabile: quis cognoscet illud?Βαθεία ἡ καρδία παρὰ πάντα, καὶ ἄνθρωπός ἐστι, καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν;
I am the Lord who search the heart and prove the reins: who give to every one according to his way, and according to the fruit of his devices.Ego Dominus scrutans cor, et probans renes: qui do unicuique iuxta viam suam, et iuxta fructum adinventionum suarum.Ἐγὼ Κύριος ἐτάζων καρδίας, καὶ δοκιμάζων νεφροὺς, τοῦ δοῦναι ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ κατὰ τοὺς καρποὺς τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων αὐτοῦ.
As the partridge hath hatched eggs which she did not lay: so is he that hath gathered riches, and not by right: in the midst of his days he shall leave them, and in his latter end he shall be a fool.Perdix fovit quae non peperit: fecit divitias, et non in iudicio: in dimidio dierum suorum derelinquet eas, et in novissimo suo erit insipiens.Ἐφώνησε πέρδιξ, συνήγαγεν ἃ οὐκ ἔτεκε, ποιῶν πλοῦτον αὐτοῦ οὐ μετὰ κρίσεως· ἐν ἡμίσει ἡμερῶν αὐτοῦ ἐγκαταλείψουσιν αὐτὸν, καὶ ἐπʼ ἐσχάτων αὐτοῦ ἔσται ἄφρων.
A high and glorious throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctification:Solium gloriae altitudinis a principio, locus sanctificationis nostrae.Θρόνος δόξης ὑψωμένος, ἁγίασμα ἡμῶν,
O Lord the hope of Israel: all that forsake thee shall be confounded: they that depart from thee, shall be written in the earth: because they have forsaken the Lord, the vein of living waters.Exspectatio Israël, Domine, omnes qui te derelinquunt confundentur: recedentes a te, in terra scribentur, quoniam dereliquerunt venam aquarum viventium Dominum.ὑπομονὴ Ἰσραήλ· Κύριε, πάντες οἱ καταλιπόντες σε καταισχυνθήτωσαν, ἀφεστηκότες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς γραφήτωσαν, ὅτι ἐγκατέλιπον πηγὴν ζωῆς, τὸν Κύριον.
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: save me, and I shall be saved, for thou art my praise.Sana me, Domine, et sanabor: salvum me fac, et salvus ero: quoniam laus mea tu es.Ἴασαί με Κύριε, καὶ ἰαθήσομαι· σῶσόν με, καὶ σωθήσομαι, ὅτι καύχημά μου σὺ εἶ.
Behold they say to me: Where is the word of the Lord? let it come.Ecce ipsi dicunt ad me: Ubi est verbum Domini? veniat:Ἰδοὺ αὐτοὶ λέγουσι πρὸς μὲ, ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ λόγος Κυρίου; ἐλθέτω.
And I am not troubled, following thee for my pastor, and I have not desired the day of man, thou knowest. That which went out of my lips, hath been right in thy sight.et ego non sum turbatus, te pastorem sequens: et diem hominis non desideravi, tu scis: quod egressum est de labiis meis, rectum in conspectu tuo fuit.Ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ἐκοπίασα κατακολουθῶν ὀπίσω σου, καὶ ἡμέραν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἐπεθύμησα· σὺ ἐπίστῃ· τὰ ἐκπορευόμενα διὰ τῶν χειλέων μου, πρὸ προσώπου σου ἐστί.
Be not thou a terror unto me, thou art my hope in the day of affliction.Non sis tu mihi formidini: spes mea tu in die afflictionis.Μὴ γενηθῇς μοι εἰς ἀλλοτρίωσιν, φειδόμενός μου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πονηρᾷ.
Let them be confounded that persecute me, and let not me be confounded: let them be afraid, and let not me be afraid: bring upon them the day of affliction, and with a double destruction, destroy them.Confundantur qui me persequuntur, et non confundar ego: paveant illi, et non paveam ego: induc super eos diem afflictionis, et duplici contritione contere eos.Καταισχυνθήτωσαν οἱ διώκοντές με, καὶ μὴ καταισχυνθείην ἐγώ· πτοηθείησαν αὐτοὶ, καὶ μὴ πτοηθείην ἐγώ· ἐπάγαγε ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἡμέραν πονηρὰν, δισσὸν σύντριμμα σύντριψον αὐτούς.
Thus saith the Lord to me: Go, and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Juda come in, and go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem:Haec dicit Dominus ad me: Vade, et sta in porta filiorum populi, per quam ingrediuntur reges Iuda, et egrediuntur, et in cunctis portis Ierusalem:Τάδε λέγει Κύριος, βάδισον, καὶ στῆθι ἐν ταῖς πύλαις υἱῶν λαοῦ σου, ἐν αἷς εἰσπορεύονται ἐν αὐταῖς βασιλεῖς Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐν αἷς ἐκπορεύονται ἐν αὐταῖς, καὶ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πύλαις Ἱερουσαλὴμ,
And thou shalt say to them: Hear the word of the Lord, ye kings of Juda, and all Juda, and all the inhabitant of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates.et dices ad eos: Audite verbum Domini, reges Iuda, et omnis Iuda, cunctique habitatores Ierusalem, qui ingredimini per portas istas.καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτοῖς, ἀκούσατε τὸν λόγον Κυρίου βασιλεῖς Ἰούδα, καὶ πᾶσα Ἰουδαία, καὶ πᾶσα Ἱερουσαλὴμ, οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι ἐν ταῖς πύλαις ταύταις·
Thus saith the Lord: Take heed to your souls and carry no burdens on the Sabbath day: and bring them not in by the gates of Jerusalem.Haec dicit Dominus: Custodite animas vestras, et nolite portare pondera in die sabbati, nec inferatis per portas Ierusalem:Τάδε λέγει Κύριος, φυλάσσεσθε τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν, καὶ μὴ αἴρετε βαστάγματα ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων, καὶ μὴ ἐκπορεύεσθε ταῖς πύλαις Ἱερουσαλὴμ,
And do not bring burdens out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work: sanctify the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.et nolite eiicere onera de domibus vestris in die sabbati, et omne opus non facietis: sanctificate diem sabbati, sicut praecepi patribus vestris.καὶ μὴ ἐκφέρετε βαστάγματα ἐξ οἰκιῶν ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων, καὶ πᾶν ἔργον οὐ ποιήσετε· ἁγιάσατε τὴν ἡμέραν τῶν σαββάτων, καθὼς ἐνετειλάμην τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν. Καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν, καὶ οὐκ ἔκλιναν τὸ οὖς αὐτῶν,
But they did not hear, nor incline their ear: but hardened their neck, that they might not hear me, and might not receive instruction.Et non audierunt, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam: sed induraverunt cervicem suam, ne audirent me, et ne acciperent disciplinam.καὶ ἐσκλήρυναν τὸν τράχηλον αὐτῶν ὑπὲρ τοὺς πατέρας αὐτῶν, τοῦ μὴ ἀκοῦσαί μου, καὶ τοῦ μὴ δέξασθαι παιδείαν.
And it shall come to pass: if you will hearken to me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burdens by the gates of this city on the sabbath day: and if you will sanctify the sabbath day, to do no work therein:Et erit: si audieritis me, dicit Dominus, ut non inferatis onera per portas civitatis huius in die sabbati: et si sanctificaveritis diem sabbati, ne faciatis in eo omne opus:Καὶ ἓσται, ἐὰν εἰσακούσητέ μου, λέγει Κύριος, τοῦ μὴ εἰσφέρειν βαστάγματα διὰ τῶν πυλῶν τῆς πόλεως ταύτης ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων καὶ ἁγιάζειν τὴν ἡμέραν τῶν σαββάτων, τοῦ μὴ ποιεῖν πᾶν ἔργον,
Then shall there enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes, sitting upon the throne of David, and riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall be inhabited forever.ingredientur per portas civitatis huius reges et principes, sedentes super solium David, et ascendentes in curribus et equis, ipsi et principes eorum, viri Iuda, et habitatores Ierusalem: et habitabitur civitas haec in sempiternum.καὶ εἰσελεύσονται διὰ τῶν πυλῶν τῆς πόλεως ταύτης βασιλεῖς καὶ ἄρχοντες καθήμενοι ἐπὶ θρόνου Δαυὶδ, καὶ ἐπιβεβηκότες ἐφʼ ἅρμασι καὶ ἵπποις αὐτῶν, αὐτοὶ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν, ἄνδρες Ἰούδα καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ· καὶ κατοικισθήσεται ἡ πόλις αὕτη εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
And they shall come from the cities of Juda, and from the places round about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plains, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing holocausts, and victims, and sacrifices, and frankincense, and they shall bring in an offering into the house of the Lord.Et venient de civitatibus Iuda, et de circuitu Ierusalem, et de terra Beniamin, et de campestribus, et de montuosis, et ab austro, portantes holocaustum, et victimam, et sacrificium, et thus, et inferent oblationem in domum Domini.Καὶ ἥξουσιν ἐκ τῶν πόλεων Ἰούδα, καὶ κυκλόθεν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἐκ γῆς Βενιαμὶν, καὶ ἐκ γῆς πεδινῆς, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους, καὶ ἐκ τῆς πρὸς Νότον, φέροντες ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ θυσίας καὶ θυμιάματα καὶ μάννα καὶ λίβανον, φέροντες αἴνεσιν εἰς οἶκον Κυρίου.
But if you will not hearken to me, to sanctify the sabbath day, and not to carry burdens, and not to bring them in by the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day: I will kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the houses of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.Si autem non audieritis me ut sanctificetis diem sabbati, et ne portetis onus, et ne inferatis per portas Ierusalem in die sabbati, succendam ignem in portis eius, et devorabit domos Ierusalem, et non extinguetur.Καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσητέ μου τοῦ ἁγιάζειν τὴν ἡμέραν τῶν σαββάτων, τοῦ μὴ αἴρειν βαστάγματα, καὶ μὴ εἰσπορεύεσθαι ταῖς πύλαις Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων, καὶ ἀνάψω πῦρ ἐν ταῖς πύλαις αὐτῆς, καὶ καταφάγεται ἄμφοδα Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ οὐ σβεσθήσεται.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
