Hebrews 6: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Greek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaGreek text (Patriarchal edition, 1904)
Wherefore leaving the word of the beginning of Christ, let us go on to things more perfect, not laying again the foundation of penance from dead works, and of faith towards God,Quapropter intermittentes inchoationis Christi sermonem, ad perfectiora feramur, non rursum iacientes fundamentum poenitentiae ab operibus mortuis, et fidei ad Deum,Διὸ ἀφέντες τὸν τῆς ἀρχῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ λόγον ἐπὶ τὴν τελειότητα φερώμεθα, μὴ πάλιν θεμέλιον καταβαλλόμενοι μετανοίας ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, καὶ πίστεως ἐπὶ Θεόν,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and imposition of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.baptismatum doctrinae, impositionis quoque manuum, ac resurrectionis mortuorum, et iudicii aeterni.βαπτισμῶν διδαχῆς, ἐπιθέσεώς τε χειρῶν, ἀναστάσεώς τε νεκρῶν καὶ κρίματος αἰωνίου.
And this will we do, if God permit.Et hoc faciemus, si quidem permiserit Deus.καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσομεν, ἐάνπερ ἐπιτρέπῃ ὁ Θεός.
For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, have tasted also the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,Impossibile est enim eos qui semel sunt illuminati, gustaverunt etiam donum caeleste, et participes facti sunt Spiritus Sancti,ἀδύνατον γὰρ τοὺς ἅπαξ φωτισθέντας γευσαμένους τε τῆς δωρεᾶς τῆς ἐπουρανίου καὶ μετόχους γενηθέντας Πνεύματος Ἁγίου
Have moreover tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, gustaverunt nihilominus bonum Dei verbum, virtutesque saeculi venturi,καὶ καλὸν γευσαμένους Θεοῦ ῥῆμα δυνάμεις τε μέλλοντος αἰῶνος,
And are fallen away: to be renewed again to penance, crucifying again to themselves the Son of God, and making him a mockery.et prolapsi sunt; rursus renovari ad poenitentiam, rursum crucifigentes sibimetipsis Filium Dei, et ostentui habentes.καὶ παραπεσόντας, πάλιν ἀνακαινίζειν εἰς μετάνοιαν, ἀνασταυροῦντας ἑαυτοῖς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ παραδειγματίζοντας.
For the earth that drinketh in the rain which cometh often upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is tilled, receiveth blessing from God.Terra enim saepe venientem super se bibens imbrem, et generans herbam opportunam illis, a quibus colitur, accipit benedictionem a Deo:γῆ γὰρ ἡ πιοῦσα τὸν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῆς πολλάκις ἐρχόμενον ὑετὸν καὶ τίκτουσα βοτάνην εὔθετον ἐκείνοις δι᾽ οὓς καὶ γεωργεῖται, μεταλαμβάνει εὐλογίας ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ·
But that which bringeth forth thorns and briers, is reprobate, and very near unto a curse, whose end is to be burnt.proferens autem spinas ac tribulos, reproba est, et maledicto proxima: cuius consummatio in combustionem.ἐκφέρουσα δὲ ἀκάνθας καὶ τριβόλους, ἀδόκιμος καὶ κατάρας ἐγγύς, ἧς τὸ τέλος εἰς καῦσιν.
But, my dearly beloved, we trust better things of you, and nearer to salvation; though we speak thus.
For God is not unjust, that he should forget your work, and the love which you have shewn in his name, you who have ministered, and do minister to the saints.Non enim iniustus Deus, ut obliviscatur operis vestri, et dilectionis, quam ostendistis in nomine ipsius, qui ministrastis sanctis, et ministratis.οὐ γὰρ ἄδικος ὁ Θεὸς ἐπιλαθέσθαι τοῦ ἔργου ὑμῶν καὶ τοῦ κόπου τῆς ἀγάπης ἧς ἐνεδείξασθε εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, διακονήσαντες τοῖς ἁγίοις καὶ διακονοῦντες.
And we desire that every one of you shew forth the same carefulness to the accomplishing of hope unto the end:Cupimus autem unumquemque vestrum eamdem ostentare sollicitudinem ad expletionem spei usque in finem:ἐπιθυμοῦμεν δὲ ἕκαστον ὑμῶν τὴν αὐτὴν ἐνδείκνυσθαι σπουδὴν πρὸς τὴν πληροφορίαν τῆς ἐλπίδος ἄχρι τέλους,
That you become not slothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience shall inherit the promises.ut non segnes efficiamini, verum imitatores eorum, qui fide, et patientia haereditabunt promissiones.ἵνα μὴ νωθροὶ γένησθε, μιμηταὶ δὲ τῶν διὰ πίστεως καὶ μακροθυμίας κληρονομούντων τὰς ἐπαγγελίας.
For God making promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom he might swear, swore by himself,Abrahae namque promittens Deus, quoniam neminem habuit, per quem iuraret, maiorem, iuravit per semetipsum,Τῷ γὰρ Ἀβραὰμ ἐπαγγειλάμενος ὁ Θεός, ἐπεὶ κατ᾽ οὐδενὸς εἶχε μείζονος ὀμόσαι, ὤμοσε καθ᾽ ἑαυτοῦ,
Saying: Unless blessing I shall bless thee, and multiplying I shall multiply thee.dicens: Nisi benedicens benedicam te, et multiplicans multiplicabo te.λέγων· ἦ μὴν εὐλογῶν εὐλογήσω σε καὶ πληθύνων πληθυνῶ σε·
And so patiently enduring he obtained the promise.Et sic longanimiter ferens, adeptus est repromissionem.καὶ οὕτω μακροθυμήσας ἐπέτυχε τῆς ἐπαγγελίας.
For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy.
Wherein God, meaning more abundantly to shew to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed an oath:In quo abundantius volens Deus ostendere pollicitationis haeredibus, immobilitatem consilii sui, interposuit iusiurandum:ἐν ᾧ περισσότερον βουλόμενος ὁ Θεὸς ἐπιδεῖξαι τοῖς κληρονόμοις τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τὸ ἀμετάθετον τῆς βουλῆς αὐτοῦ, ἐμεσίτευσεν ὅρκῳ,
That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have the strongest comfort, who have fled for refuge to hold fast the hope set before us.ut per duas res immobiles, quibus impossibile est mentiri Deum, fortissimum solatium habeamus, qui confugimus ad tenendam propositam spem,ἵνα διὰ δύο πραγμάτων ἀμεταθέτων, ἐν οἷς ἀδύνατον ψεύσασθαι Θεόν, ἰσχυρὰν παράκλησιν ἔχωμεν οἱ καταφυγόντες κρατῆσαι τῆς προκειμένης ἐλπίδος·
Which we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, and which entereth in even within the veil;quam sicut anchoram habemus animae tutam ac firmam, et incedentem usque ad interiora velaminis,ἣν ὡς ἄγκυραν ἔχομεν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀσφαλῆ τε καὶ βεβαίαν καὶ εἰσερχομένην εἰς τὸ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος,
Where the forerunner Jesus is entered for us, made a high priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedech.ubi praecursor pro nobis introivit Iesus, secundum ordinem Melchisedech pontifex factus in aeternum.ὅπου πρόδρομος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν εἰσῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς, κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισεδὲκ ἀρχιερεὺς γενόμενος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures today and…
