Amos 8: Douay-Rheims, Vulgata Clementina and Septuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
Douay-RheimsVulgata ClementinaSeptuagint (Sixtine edition, 1587)
These things the Lord shewed to me: and behold a hook to draw down the fruit.
And he said: What seest thou, Amos? And I said: A hook to draw down fruit. And the Lord said to me: The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more.Et dixit: Quid tu vides, Amos? Et dixi: Uncinum pomorum. Et dixit Dominus ad me: Venit finis super populum meum Israël; non adiiciam ultra ut pertranseam eum.καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς μὲ, ἥκει τὸ πέρας ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν μου Ἰσραὴλ, οὐ προσθήσω ἔτι τοῦ παρελθεῖν αὐτόν.
And the hinges of the temple shall screak in that day, saith the Lord God: many shall die: silence shall be cast in every place.Et stridebunt cardines templi in die illa, dicit Dominus Deus: multi morientur; in omni loco proiicietur silentium.Καὶ ὀλολύξει τὰ φατνώματα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος· πολὺς ὁ πεπτωκὼς ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ, ἐπιῤῥίψω σιωπήν.
Hear this, you that crush the poor, and make the needy of the land to fail,Audite hoc, qui conteritis pauperem, et deficere facitis egenos terrae,Ἀκούσατε δὴ ταῦτα οἱ ἐκτρίβοντες εἰς τοπρωῒ πένητα, καὶ καταδυναστεύοντες πτωχοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς,
Saying: When will the month be over, and we shall sell our wares: and the sabbath, and we shall open the corn: that we may lessen the measure, and increase the sicle, and may convey in deceitful balances, dicentes: Quando transibit mensis, et venundabimus merces? et sabbatum, et aperiemus frumentum, ut imminuamus mensuram, et augeamus siclum, et supponamus stateras dolosas,λέγοντες, πότε διελεύσεται ὁ μὴν, καὶ ἐμπολήσομεν, καὶ τὰ σάββατα, καὶ ἀνοίξομεν θησαυρὸν τοῦ ποιῆσαι μέτρον μικρὸν, καὶ τοῦ μεγαλῦναι στάθμιον, καὶ ποιῆσαι ζυγὸν ἄδικον,
That we may possess the needy for money, and the poor for a pair of shoes, and may sell the refuse of the corn?ut possideamus in argento egenos et pauperes pro calceamentis, et quisquilias frumenti vendamus?τοῦ κτᾶσθαι ἐν ἀργυρίῳ καὶ πτωχοὺς, καὶ πένητα ἀντὶ ὑποδημάτων, καὶ ἀπὸ παντὸς γεννήματος ἐμπορευσόμεθα.
The Lord hath sworn against the pride of Jacob: surely I will never forget all their works.Iuravit Dominus in superbiam Iacob: Si oblitus fuero usque ad finem omnia opera eorum.Ὀμνύει Κύριος κατὰ τῆς ὑπερηφανίας Ἰακὼβ, εἰ ἐπιλησθήσεται εἰς νῖκος πάντα τὰ ἔργα ὑμῶν,
Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein: and rise up altogether as a river, and be cast out, and run down as the river of Egypt?
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that the sun shall go down at midday, and I will make the earth dark in the day of light:Et erit in die illa, dicit Dominus Deus: occidet sol in meridie, et tenebrescere faciam terram in die luminis:Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος, δύσεται ὁ ἥλιος μεσημβρίας, καὶ συσκοτάσει ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τὸ φῶς,
And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring up sackcloth upon every back of yours, and baldness upon every head: and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the latter end thereof as a bitter day.et convertam festivitates vestras in luctum, et omnia cantica vestra in planctum, et inducam super omne dorsum vestrum saccum, et super omne caput calvitium: et ponam eam quasi luctum unigeniti, et novissima eius quasi diem amarum.καὶ μεταστρέψω τὰς ἑορτὰς ὑμῶν εἰς πένθος, καὶ πάσας τὰς ᾠδὰς ὑμῶν εἰς θρῆνον, καὶ ἀναβιβῶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ὀσφὺν σάκκον, καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν κεφαλὴν φαλάκρωμα· καὶ θήσομαι αὐτὸν ὡς πένθος ἀγαπητοῦ, καὶ τοὺς μετʼ αὐτοῦ ὡς ἡμέραν ὀδύνης.
Behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will send forth a famine into the land: not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.Ecce dies veniunt, dicet Dominus, et mittam famem in terram: non famem panis, neque sitim aquae, sed audiendi verbum Domini.Ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ λιμὸν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, οὐ λιμὸν ἄρτων, οὐδὲ δίψαν ὕδατος, ἀλλὰ λιμὸν τοῦ ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον Κυρίου.
And they shall move from sea to sea, and from the north to the east: they shall go about seeking the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.Et commovebuntur a mari usque ad mare, et ab aquilone usque ad orientem: circuibunt quaerentes verbum Domini, et non invenient.Καὶ σαλευθήσονται ὕδατα ἀπὸ τῆς θαλάσσης ἕως θαλάσσης, καὶ ἀπὸ Βοῤῥᾶ ἕως ἀνατολῶν περιδραμοῦνται ζητοῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ οὐ μὴ εὕρωσιν.
In that day the fair virgins, and the young men shall faint for thirst. In die illa deficient virgines pulchrae et adolescentes in siti,Ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐκλείψουσιν αἱ παρθένοι αἱ καλαὶ, καὶ οἱ νεανίσκοι ἐν δίψει,
They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say: Thy God, O Dan, liveth: and the way of Bersabee liveth: and they shall fall, and shall rise no more.qui iurant in delicto Samariae, et dicunt: Vivit Deus tuus, Dan, et vivit via Bersabee; et cadent, et non resurgent ultra.οἱ ὀμνύοντες κατὰ τοῦ ἱλασμοῦ Σαμαρείας, καὶ οἱ λέγοντες, ζῇ ὁ θεός σου Δὰν, καὶ ζῇ ὁ θεός σου Βηρσαβεέ· καὶ πεσοῦνται, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀναστῶσιν ἔτι.

Jesus laments over Jerusalem, which kills the prophets
